Xbox Game Pass is one that other companies are looking into, with the likes of Sony seemingly willing to incorporate a similar system given the success Microsoft’s initiative has had up to now. Game Pass has been known to include evengames the caliber ofOutriders, MLB The Show21, and the upcomingHaloInfinite, and many players were hoping to seeResident Evil Villageamong the newly added titles to this service. However, this is not the case, and recent information is likely to address the reason why.
Apparently,Resident Evil Villageis not going to be part of theXbox Game Passfor a while, at least a year, and that is because of a rumored marketing deal contract between Sony and Capcom. This contract is supposedly blocking Capcom from adding it to Xbox Game Pass from adding for one whole year, which made many fans angry and upset. If this deal is legitimate, it’s worth noting that this sort of deal is not something new, andResident Evil Villageand Xbox Game Pass are not the first to be hit by this widespread practice.
It’s not a 1:1 comparison, notably, butBorderlands 3was exclusive to the Epic Games Store for a year. Though many look at is as a blocking tactic, it’s more a natural evolution of exclusivity clauses (even though it’s not an exclusive game). Reportedly, Epic Games paid a huge amount of money to ensure that the game was exclusively purchasable from the Epic Games Store, which means that the deal forResident Evil Villagecould be not too dissimilar from that between Gearbox and Epic Games. As a matter of fact, the newResident Evilhas been part of Sony’s highlighted games selection to demonstrate just how potentthe new PS5is when running games that boast incredible graphics.
The documents that appeared earlier this week on Twitter, whose validity still remains unverified, allegedly prevent the newly released chapter ofthe acclaimed survival horror seriesto launch on several platforms, including Xbox Game Pass, and other subscription-based services. Whether valid or not, this type of deal is not very surprising. After all, each new release has its own revenue-making deals, andResident Evil Villagecould still come to the Xbox Game Pass later on, likely in one year’s time.
