The Last of Us Part IImight easily be the most anticipated game for the rest of this console generation, given the first game’s success both critically and commercially. There hasn’t been much word on the game, besides some footage, a teaser, and images, though the fact that there aretwo planned PlayStation events this monthsuggests that gamers may get something beyond a gameplay video which could include the game’s release date.

The PlayStation events planned for September both fall on the same day. The first, announced September 9 by Naughty Dog director Neil Druckmann, is amedia event forThe Last of Us Part II. The second, announced more recently, is Sony’s State of Play streaming presentation that will display new games and updates for the PlayStation 4. Both events fall on September 24, with the latter event possibly including additional information.

This all brings into question the release date forThe Last of Us Part II. There have been many rumors suggesting possible release dates, including one of November 2019, which appears highly unlikely. Another common rumor has involved a release window for February 2020. The most recent release date rumor came from aThe Last of Us Part IIrelease date leakgiving the game a June 09, 2025 release date. It is far more specific, but it’s also far more reasonable at this point than any of the prior rumors.

November seems plainly unlikely now, since two months isn’t nearly enough time to sufficiently market the game and properly show off what it has to offer. A February release date also doesn’t appear that likely because that release window both appears a stretch and is not ideal, given that January and February are typically not months that see big game releases. As such, if Naughty Dog presumably wants to releaseThe Last of Us Part IIat a strategic time and in a timely manner to not interfere with plans for the next console generation, May would seem like a reasonable release month.

Next week’s event seem like a very ideal time to discuss release information aboutThe Last of Us Part II. With one event focused on the game, which is apparentlylarger than thought possible, and the other centered around PlayStation broadly, it is quite likely gamers will get some details on the game’s release date. The May 2020 rumor is a very compelling date, though.
