While it was clear from the initial trailer that this adventure wouldn’t base itself around series protagonist Nathan Drake, it was only confirmed today that the popular adventurer wouldn’t appear via cameo in the standalone story.
The confirmation comes straight from the Sony PlayStation Blog, with Game Director Kurt Margenau revealing that a cameo from Nathan Drake was something the studio had considered, but ultimately just didn’t feel right – Drake’s story had been told and wrapped up nicely, so having him re-appear here would have felt a little too forced. Here’s how Margenau weighed in on the decision:
“We entertained a few possible ideas around including Nate as a secondary character, but everything we did felt superfluous because we tied it all up with Uncharted 4. We’re not going to touch on Nathan Drake in this, at all.”
Margenau also joked that fans could imagine Drake sitting on the couch playingCrash Bandicootas the events ofThe Lost Legacyunfold, making a solid reference to one ofUncharted 4’s most nostalgia-inducing moments. While Nathan’s trademark humor will be missed, it’s probably a good decision that Naughty Dog doesn’t spoil the sendoff the studio has already given him; let’s leave the obligatory cameos to Stan Lee for the time being.
While Nathan Drake won’t appear in the upcoming standalone expansion, it’s possible that Nathan Drake’s brother Sam may make an appearance, though this is just based on popular hearsay. What is confirmed is that Chloe and Nadine will betaking on a war-profiteer named Asav, who will be striving to get his mitts on a powerful ancient Indian artifact. Margenau also stated that the game will feature the biggest area ever seen in anUnchartedgame, which should provide avid treasure hunters with plenty to play with.
