TheUnchartedfilm is moving forward once more with a “totally rad” new director, so to speak. Dan Trachtenberg, director of10 Cloverfield Laneand co-host of The Totally Rad Show podcast, will now head the adaptation of Sony’s popular first-party franchise. Trachtenberg is an avid fan of video games and all around nerd, which is certain to bring a new level of faith to fans ofUnchartedfrustrated with the film’s choppy production up to this point.
Trachtenberg will be theUnchartedfilm’s fourth announced director, with the most recent departure ofReal Steeldirector Shawn Levybeing attributed to scheduling conflicts. The production under Trachtenberg will retainSpider-Manstar Tom Holland, who will play a young Nathan Drake, as well as a script that’s gone through several drafts and revisions up to this point.

As for when filming will begin, that remains a mystery. Holland is scheduled for a lengthy press tour for the late April release ofAvengers: Endgame, so filming could tentatively begin once that’s come to its conclusions. Yet asUncharted’s production so far has proven, anything can happen between now and then.
Trachtenberg’s first full-length production and directorial debut was10 Cloverfield Lane, a suspenseful sci-fi thriller loosely tied to theCloverfieldmonster movie and brand. But prior to10 Cloverfield Lane, Trachtenberg spent multiple years doing The Totally Rad Show podcast with Alex Albrecht and Jeff Cannata. The podcast ended right as Trachtenberg’s film work took off.
Towards the end of The Totally Rad Show, Trachtenberg released a short film that would launch him into larger productions.Portal: No Escapewas released in 2011, a fan-project based on Valve’s popularPortalfranchise. Soon after, Trachtenberg would be reported as attached to several major film productions including a sci-fi heist film for Universal and an adaptation of theY: The Last Mancomic series. Neither project would ultimately come to fruition.
Now Trachtenberg is back withUncharted, though he’s also done work on a superhero TV show namedThe Boyssince 2016’s10 Cloverfield Lane. All that’s left to do is the work. Hopefully, the fourth director is the charm.
TheUnchartedfilm is currently in production and has no announced release window.
