The NPD Group releases its monthly report on gaming sales, revealing thatUncharted 4was the best selling game in May, outperforming all other new releases.
May was a great month for gamers with plenty of fresh and exciting titles, and the industry is reaping the benefits, too. A new report reveals that the overall sales of video games went up in May, andUncharted 4had all of them beat.
There were plenty of new games released in May for gamers to enjoy, includingDoom,Overwatch, andBattleborn, butUncharted 4: A Thief’s Endhas left them all in its dust. According to the NPD Group,Uncharted 4led all other games in sales for May of 2016, despite the fact that it’s a PlayStation 4 exclusive and every other game on the list is available on more than one platform.
FollowingUncharted 4, the best sellers of May includeDoom,Overwatch, andBattleborn, respectively. It may surprise some gamers to learn that on top of the65 million unitsGrand Theft Auto Vhas already sold, its popularity doesn’t appear to be dropping in the least. It’s been nearly three years sinceGTA Vwas originally released, and it’s still came in as the number five best seller for May. In comparison,April 2016’s best seller,Dark Souls III, has fallen to the tenth spot on the list, followingMinecraft,NBA 2K16,Call of Duty: Black Ops III,andMLB 16: The Show.
Overall, game sales are up when compared to this time last year, and they’ve also experienced a big bounce from last month. The NPD Group’s analysis indicates that the large number of excellent new releases in May are to thank for this, as April’s sales saw a 15% drop in comparison to April of 2015, while May has seen a 18% increase in comparison to May of 2015.
Gamers who have been paying attention toUncharted 4’s achievements probably aren’t surprised by this. After all, Sony previously announced thatUncharted 4sold 2.7 million unitsin just the first week following its release. While the hype behind games likeOverwatchhas been pretty high, the legacy of theUnchartedseries probably helped to propel it to sales success, whileOverwatchis Blizzard’s first IP in 17 years.
Uncharted 4received stellar reviews across the board, proving that it could live up to the hype that Sony generated withUncharted 4’s intense marketing campaign. WhileUncharted 4: A Thief’s Endmay be the last adventure of Nathan Drake, with sales success like this, chances are that Sony and Naughty Dog will find a way to continue the series in some shape or form.
Uncharted 4: A Thief’s Endis out now exclusively for PlayStation 4.
