During a routine stream ofEscape From Tarkov, aTwitchstreamer had to get serious after his home was hit with gunfire. What was supposed to be a good time quickly became a moment of fear.

A full-time college student, the person in question is known as 50calapr. Boasting 463 followers, the rising streamer is best known for occasional streams of his current favorite game, 2017’s PC-exclusiveEscape From Tarkov, all simply titled “a good time.” The game is a multiplayer tactical first-person shooter in which players must escape the huge maps alive by reaching the extraction points, all the while shooting other players and nabbing loot. It distinguishes itself from its genre with its unusually high levels of weapon customizability, individual health bars for each limb, and lack of an ammo counter, among other mechanics to add to the realism. It’s easy to see why such a game would gain some traction, albeit not always for the right reasons.

Sadly, the gritty in-game violence soon became real during 50calapr’s most recent stream. In a thirty-two-second clip making the rounds on Reddit, the streamer is readying himself for another raid by customizing his firearm, when just over halfway through, a flurry of gunshots is heard off-screen. He panics and ducks until the noise ceases, before grabbing his own rifle, cocking it, and heading for the door. This isn’t the first time offline violence has occurred on stream, and it probably won’t be the last. Various users have been arrested on camera, been emotionally abused over the phone,or even committed the violence themselves.

Fortunately, in the same Reddit post, theTwitchstreamer himself commented in the replies, explaining that he was okay. Apparently, the shooting was a drive-by and was likely drug or gang-related. Such incidents are not uncommon in his area, but during this particular one, no innocents were harmed. The only damage reported was to the door in his apartment, whose glass was shot out. 50calapr further explained that owning a gun is basically a requirement due to the high crime rates and cheap rent where he lives, combined with the offline commitments in his life and his lack of a massive income.

Many people venture onto online venues like Twitch to get away from all the grit and misery of life, and many content creators help feed this atmosphere by seldom delving into their personal lives. But sometimes, the world has its ways of sneaking its way in and ruining the fun.
