In a 2D medium, Titans don’t look all that scary, butKane Pixelsmanaged to disprove that in under 10 minutes. A VFX artist onYouTube, most notable for hisFound Footage:Backroomsseries, he created a miniseries of “Historical Footage” using iconic scenes fromAttack on Titan.
Declaration of War in Liberio
Using actual dialogue from season 4 ofAttack on Titan, Kane Pixels recreates the very moment that Willy Tybur declares war on Paradis. As watchers are aware, during this time, Eren and Reiner are having a conversation underground that results in a massive attack on Marley, when Eren unleashes his Titan form. What began as an old video showing a historic moment in political history, became an infamous “lost tape”. Right down to the hand gestures and layout of the venue, Kane Pixels succeeds in making anaccurate rendition of the original scene. What makes it more terrifying is that the camera footage implies that whoever was recording it was in the audience, and so we see firsthand just how terrifying it is to be suddenly attacked by a Titan. A giant throwing buildings and debris like small objects, and the next second it’s looking right at you with its soulless eyes and receding lips.
The Depths of Despair
One of the most haunting sounds is an alarm or siren going off. When the unknown is approaching, and this feeling of dread overcomes you, you’re frozen in place. But what’s even worse is when you look up and are met with the source of your fear. This footage encapsulates theperspective of the victims of The Rumbling.
The helplessness of hope that invigorates your desire to keep running, but you know you’re at death’s age. Different angles of the many Colossal Titans demonstrate how slow but deadly their march is, as your loved ones are trampled under them. Left with a brief sequence of Eren inside his Titan’s mouth, bathed in a crimson red. Was that what Mikasa saw?
The Rumbling Animated
In the far distance,a skeletal hunched figuretrails behind what will be the cause of your death. It’s much larger than any giant, building, or Titan you have ever seen. It looks almost like a conch slithering its way to you, with its ribs pushing it forward - like a centipede. In the dead center, you see its face - Death’s face. It stares into you, unmoving, yet it leers ever closer.
Historical Footage
The most mysterious of the bunch. This footage appears to be a compilation of leftovers that have long since been abandoned by time. Ranging from Titan remains, to a group in the far distance, Marleyan soldiers are sent off to war. What’s most eerie about this film, in particular, are the cuts to the Titans.
We often forget that Titans do not just look like conventional giant monsters.They appear as uncanny humans. In real life, looking out on the horizon, and seeing figures lurking about, that sight alone is enough to haunt anyone. Most mysteriously, however, is when it glitches to show us snippets of Paths. While the rest can be chalked up to conventional lost media, a sudden glitch and look into an alternate dimension is another story. If the viewer had no context, and this was a true event of the past, how would society fair with this knowledge?
