Trinity is one of the coolest characters to ever grace the big screen. She’s the first character we’re introduced to inThe Matrix,embodying the recognizable leather get-up, slicked-back hair, and awesome martial arts that have become staples of the franchise. A Reddit user who goes by the namekarenscarlet1has created a pretty impressive replica of everyone’s favorite motorcycle driving heroine. She’s also donea rendition of Black Widow’s costumefromAvengers: Infinity Warwhich can be found on her Reddit profile. The Trinity costume features the character’s signature slicked-back short hair, sunglasses, and black leather outfit.Karenscarlet1certainly bears a resemblance to Trinity actress Carrie-Anne Moss and has also nailed the stoic Matrix stare.

Trinity made heron-screen debut in 1999in the firstMatrix. In the film’s opening scene we’re introduced to this leather-clad woman, a hacker terrorist of some kind, as she’s surrounded by police and Agents. As one of the officers is arresting her she spins around, leaps into the air in slow motion, and kicks him several feet across the room. She then proceeds to run up a wall, dodging bullets from other officers. She’s chased over a rooftop, leaping inhuman distances until she’s once again cornered when one of the Agents assumes control of a garbage truck driver. Trinity high tails it into a phone booth and then is seemingly crushed as the truck slams into the booth, obliterating it. The agent looks in the wreckage, but Trinity’s gone.
It’s by far one of the most memorable openings in action cinema history, and one of the coolest ways to introduce a character. Trinity was also the focus of the high octane opening of the second filmThe Matrix: Reloaded,where she leaps out of skyscraper window while engaging in a firefight with an agent, seemingly falling to her death asNeo (Keanu Reeves)awakes from his nightmare/premonition. While Trinity’s appearance in these films is in tune with the overall late 90’s/early 2000’s aesthetic that’s prominent in the films, she stands out as a pretty unique love interest for the protagonist Neo.
While many love interests in action films are emphasized as being traditionally feminine, and usually in need of saving, Trinity was somewhat androgynous, not succumbing to gender stereotypes. In recent years some fans have even theorized that the Matrix can be seen asan allegory for LGBTQ identity. The film plays heavily on themes of transformation and self-image, and since the film’s release both directors have come out as trans. One half of the sibling directing duo, Lilly Wachowski, has even discussed the trans undertones present in the film in interviews. She also hilariously called out Elon Musk and Ivanka Trump on Twitter after they tried to co-opt the term “Red Pilling,” a reference to the original film that has unfortunately become a calling card for far-right extremists and conspiracy theorists. The other half of the duo, Lana Wachowski isreturning to the director’s chairfor the upcoming fourth film.
Sadly,Trinity’s involvement in the sequelsdidn’t quite live up to her role in the first film. In the second and third installment of the franchise Trinity was largely relegated to a love interest who was constantly in need of saving by Neo.Despite finally meeting her demise inThe Matrix: Revolutions, Carrie-Anne Moss is confirmed to be returning to the role for the upcoming fourth film, but details are scarce at the moment. It’ll be nice to see Moss in the role again after all these years, but how will Trinity return? Will she be a program copy? Will Neo resurrect her again? Fans will have to wait untilthe currently untitled fourth filmcomes out later this year.
The Matrix 4is currently scheduled to be released on December 22nd, 2021 in theaters and on HBO Max.
