CD Projekt Red inadvertently makes a lot ofWitcher 3fans happy today, as news leaks indicating that the popularGwentcard game will become its own IP.
When CD Projekt Red releasedThe Witcher 3: Wild Hunttoincredible reviewsand fanfare, it’s hard to believe the Poland-based developer had any idea just how massive the response to the Western-style RPG would be.The Witcher 3was a nominee for Game of the Year on virtually every ballot, taking home several awards and receiving praise for both its core content and the way it released meaningful and relatively cheap DLC. CD Projekt Red has definitely shown that it values the gamers who have madeThe Witcher 3such a success, and that philosophy has extended to one of its most popular sub-games as well.
As it turns out, when CD Projekt Red is on form, the studio can accidentally create another engaging, fun game inside of an already excellent one.Gwent, the card-playing mini-gamethat took the gaming world by storm and spawned several memes and fan creations, is now going to be getting its own game, a recent trademark filing from CD Projekt Red suggests. The trademark was filed with class 9 and class 41 (videogames and software) into the European Union Intellectual Property Office two days ago, alongside what appears to be an official logo.
The leak comes just weeks after studio head Marcin Iwinski teased the possibility of anew CD Projekt Red game being revealed at E3 2016, and while it may be an unexpected announcement, it’s certainly one that makes a lot of sense.Gwenthas been a very popular addition to theWitcheruniverse, and given the recent success of online card games likeHearthstone, aGwentIP seems to be a relatively safe investment of time for a studio that’s likely very busy withCyberpunk 2077.
While there’s still a lot of information gamers don’t know,Gwentis likely the sort of game that could be available on mobile platforms as well, which gives the title a lot of reach that games likeThe Witcher 3didn’t really offer CD Projekt Red. It’s also a way to continue producingWitchercontent after CD Projekt Red went on record as sayingThe Witcher 3’sBlood & Winemarked the end of the series, or at least Geralt’s part in it.
Gwentalready has a strong track record with gamers, and there’s no reason to believe that a game dedicated to playing Geralt, Ciri, and Yennefer cards in the right combination can’t do well on its own, either. Those looking for more information before deciding whether or notGwentmight interest them won’t have long to wait - E3 2016 is right around the corner, and CD Projekt Red looks set to reveal another potentially big IP on gaming’s biggest stage.
