Netflix has renewedThe Umbrella Academy, a superhero show based on comic series of the same name by Gerard Way, for a third season. Series leads Ellen Page and Tom Hopper are among the cast members set to reprise their respective roles as the Hargreeves siblings.
The Umbrella Academypremiered on Netflix in February 2019 and returned for its second season in July 2020. According to Neilsen, the second season ofThe Umbrella Academyranked asthe number one streaming seriesfrom August 3 to August 9, besting popular acquired shows includingShamelessandDexter.

The Umbrella Academy’s success has evidently earned the series a third season, which will consist of 10 one-hour episodes. Page and Hopper will be joined by returning stars David Casañeda, Emmy Raver-Lampman, Robert Sheehan, Aidan Gallagher, Justin H. Min, and Colm Feore. Series creator Steve Blackman will return as showrunner and executive producer, serving in the latter role alongside Jeff F. King, Mike Richardson, Keith Goldberg, and Jesse McKeown while Gerard Way and Gabriel Bá co-produce. The cast and crew are currently scheduled to return toToronto, Canadato begin filming season 3 in February 2021. Netflix has not announced a premiere date for season 3.
As with the comic book series on which it is based,The Umbrella Academycenters on the adopted and superpowered Hargreeves siblings as they attempt to stop an impending apocalypse while trying to solve the mystery of their father’s death. The second season found the siblings separated after beingsent back in timeto different points of the ’60s, where they would have to find each other again to prevent the apocalypse for a second time. Though successful in their goal, the siblings returned to the present only to find their actions had significantly altered the timeline.
Fans of the series will likely be relieved to hear ofThe Umbrella Academy’s renewal, especially considering it felt like there was a point this year when Netflix wasaxing more shows than it was renewing. Of course, in many of these instances, the added costs and the unique challenges presented by the COVID-19 pandemic factored into the streamer’s decisions.
