In September, a data leak occurred that revealed some interesting information about games that may be coming to the streaming service GeForce NOW. The leak caused a stir in the gaming community because some of the titles on the list have not yet been announced, including a remaster for 1997’sFinal Fantasy Tactics,or are still highlyspeculated upon likeBioShock 2022. PC ports ofFinal Fantasy 7 RemakeandFinal Fantasy 16, the latter of which is still in development as a PS5 exclusive, also appeared on the list.

Nvidia acknowledged the validity of the leaked GeForce NOW list, but claimed that the titles on it were merely placeholders for tracking and testing. However, Ubisoft quickly issued a takedown notice as the list made its away around the internet, causing people to speculate that at least a few of the Ubisoft games were real. And insider Jez Corden of Windows Central confirmed that some of the Microsoft titles were known codenames for actual projects likeFableand Avalanche Studios’ upcoming co-op multiplayer gameContraband.

A few days ago, an excited Reddit user shared some information that seems to further corroborate the rumors that aremastered version ofFinal Fantasy Tacticsis in development. The user, DrNanard, received a playtest invitation from Eidos-Montreal, which handles some playtests for Square Enix. On a survey intended to verify if people qualify to participate in the playtest, there were a number of questions hinting that the game might be a tactical RPG. Some of the games mentioned on the survey wereFire Emblem,Ogre Battle,Disgaeaand, notably,Final Fantasy Tactics.

DrNanard also pointed out that particular attention seemed to be placed onFinal Fantasy Tactics, with questions about various versions and spinoffs of the game. This was also done with theFire Emblemseries, however. Also of note was that the playtest survey brought upFinal Fantasy 12and its Nintendo DS sequelRevenant Wings. These two titles are set in the kingdom ofIvalice that was introduced inFinal Fantasy Tacticsand is the setting for a number of subsequent games in the franchise.

The connections drawn betweenFinal Fantasy Tacticsand the questions asked in the playtest survey, perhaps sparked by the recent rumors about the game’s remaster, are compelling. As DrNanard points out, “this is not very subtle.” Eidos-Montreal clearly is looking for playtesters who are familiar with the types of games mentioned, but some commenters on the Reddit thread pointed out that the game in question could just as easily be anOgre Battleremaster or something completely new. Either way, it’s fun to speculate, and the game that is actually being developed will hopefully be revealed soon.
