TheFrierenanime series portrays a world in which mages and warriors stand above the average human. With the first-class mage exam, mages are shown to be skilled users of magic who can defy the laws of nature, as long as they can visualize the result of what they want.
While many mages have appeared in theFrierenseries, they are not equal to each other, and some are vastly more capable than others. Whether it is Macht’s Diagoldze, Methode’s well-roundedness, or Serie’s prowess, some mages have certain skills that put them far above the rest.The following entries contain manga spoilers. When it comes to mages, thelist of powerful characters is much more filtered, but the mages are arguably the most powerful of them all. Despite their magic prowess, the strongest mages in Frieren combine sheer power with unique abilities like clones, extreme casting speed, or simply high-end visualization.
Individuals like Serie and Frieren reign as the strongest known mages, but many others are not to be underestimated, irrespective of how long they’ve lived. From young and budding individuals like Fern to old-age power hagglers like Denken, the strongest mages are formidable in their own right.
13Land
A Master Of Clones And Deception Beyond Compare
The full extent ofLand’soffensive abilities is unknown, buthis clone abilities are without a doubttop-notch. As Serie noted, Land was bold enough to take the first-class mage exam with a clone while he remained in his hometown, sipping tea at the time Serie looked.
The amount of self-confidence it takes to do what the then 2nd-class mage did is extraordinary. Despite being a clone, Land performed very well during the exam, and in the evening Ubel was unable to recognize his second body as a clone. In terms of thinking ahead, tactics, and trickery, Land ranks ahead the very best.
12Wirbel
A Battle-Hardened Strategist With Lethal Combat Magic
As the captain of the Northern Magic Corps,Wirbelstands out as the creator of the immobilizing spell Sorganeil and a battle-hardened mage. Due to fighting demons on the frontlines, Wirbel has vast experience when it comes to war and battle magic in general. Similar to Serie, Wirbel sees magic as a tool for killing but then hesitates to do so.
Despite his hesitant indulgence to kill, Wirbel would absolutely do so once he deems it necessary. As seen during the first-class mage exam, Wirbel is highly adaptable to situations, and he and his group were able to hold off Denken’s clone for a considerable amount of time. In terms of pure application of combat magic, Wirbel ranks among the best mages and has the experience to back it up.
11Sense
A Formidable All-Rounder With Enchanted Hair
As a first-class mage and a proctor for the first-class mage exam,Senseis by no means weak. Unfortunately,match-ups in theFrierenseriesaren’t direct, and she was a bad matchup against Ubel. In terms of overall attack and defense capabilities, Sense’s hair makes her an all-rounder.
With various powerful enchantments on her hair, she can cut through rocks and steel, even blocking magical attacks of all kinds. Moreover, due to the sheer mass and agile nature with which her hair moves, incapacitating her will be nigh impossible even with powerful immobilizing spells like Sorganeil, as her whole body needs to be in view, including her hair.
10Denken
A Cunning Tactician Who Rose To Power Through Strategy And Strength
Immediately he was known to be joining the first-class mage exam,Denkenwas considered as the mage with the highest potential to pass the exam. Such was the reputation that preceded him. Before becoming a full-fledged first-class mage, Denken was a well-known imperial mage who dealt with politics and rose to the top in a power struggle.
His strength isn’t reliant on his magic alone but on his cunning and the experience he has garnered by being involved in various bouts for power. Despite his more political disposition, Denken’s strength and experience make him a force to be reckoned with wherever he goes.
9Ubel
A Flair For Killing Others Without Remorse
The human mageUbelis well known for being a notorious troublemaker, and she has the strength to back it up. In terms of abilities, Ubel’s magic is well suited to killing, as she specializes in cleaving magic and copying the magic of others.
Ubel’s ability to copy others' magic is particularly powerful. She does not need to understand the principles behind such magic; she only needs to empathize with the user of the magic she wants, and she’ll be able to perform it. This allows Ubel to easily add spells to her repertoire, and it is truly a terrifying ability.
8Methode
Her Well-Roundedness Makes Her A Versatile Fighter
This first-class mage is different from many others, in that she doesn’t specialize in any particular type of magic. As a mage,Methodeis skilled in various types of magic, which allows her to tackle various situations in various ways. Moreover, unlike most other mages, Methode is capable of utilizing goddess magic to heal others.
This further increases the range of her abilities. She is a truly versatile mage, capable of facing most opponents without herself having a specific weakness. As a mage who grew up in the Northern Lands, Methode is used to facing demons and their deviousness. Combining her experience with her healing prowess, few can stand up to her.
7Fern
Even With Basic Attacks Spells, Frieren’s Apprentice Is Unmatched
Frieren’s apprentice is quickly gaining ground inthe world of magicshe finds herself in.Fernhas always been diligent in her training, and during the first-class mage exam, her skills began to come to light.
Unlike most mages of the current era, Fern predominantly uses simple offense and defensive magic. Despite most modern mages using spells with high-volume physical attacks, few have managed to best Fern. With her simple attacks and tactics, Fern has overwhelmed many of her opponents. She has even gained recognition from Serie, as she was able to detect the instability in Serie’s mana, something many of Serie’s students have been unable to accomplish.
6Lernen
The First-Class Mage Is A Student Of The Great Serie
Serie has had many apprentices throughout her long life. In the current era, one of her most outstanding apprentices isLernen, the very first first-class mage. As Frieren stated, the bodies that govern magic over time change, and new systems are put into place with each change.
After the class mage system came into practice, Lernen was the first person to become a first-class mage. Moreover, because of his high skill, Serie put him in charge of conducting the first-class mage exams. Another proof of his strength is that he was able to instantly detect the instability in Frieren’s mana, a feat that hadn’t happened since the Demon King’s time.
5Macht
The Most Powerful Of The Seven Sages Of Destruction
The Seven Sages of Destruction are a group of powerful demon mages who worked directly under the Omniscient Schlacht. Ofthe Seven Sages of Destruction,Machtreigns as the most powerful. His signature move, Diagoldze, transforms any material thing into gold.
Like all demons, Macht is individualistic; however, he detests battles and fighting. Not because he hates killing, but because all the battles he participates in are mundane and end too quickly. Macht was so powerful that Serie stated that he could transform the entire northern plateau into gold if he wanted. Because of his power, Serie had to personally partake in subjugating Macht, and he remained sealed until Frieren came across him.
4Schlacht
The Right Hand Of The Demon King
The right-hand man of the Demon King is an existence to be feared. The influenceSchlachtpossessed as the second in command of the Demon King was immense, as demons occupy positions not based on influence, but on their strength and magic power. Schlacht’s innate ability allowed him to see the future and the countless possibilities that might occur.
With his precognition, Schlacht is capable of seeing up to a thousand years into the future, which allows him to plan and act accordingly. According to legend, Schlacht and the Hero of the South took out each other; however, for someone who sees countless possibilities, the Omniscient Schlacht may still be alive.
