In a recent interview, Todd Howard confirms that the four main Constellation companions are the only ones to support personal, full-length storylines and romance inStarfield. There is much more to be revealed, of course, but this gives fans a good insight intohowStarfield’s companions work.
Howard also revealed that player choices can impact relationships with characters, making them incredibly mad at players, but stopping short of confirming whether they can leave the player. He does add that, if players don’t like companions, they can all but completely abandon them on unused ships, outposts, and locations. He even adds that it’s technically possible to have companions basically all be robots, like theconfirmedStarfieldcompanion Vasco, but there was some hesitancy on how one could effectively accomplish that. It sounds like there will be plenty of companion characters in the game, but only four will support romance options.

During the latest Kinda Funny Xcast, host SnowBikeMike asked a community-oriented question based onStarfield’s romance approach. Howard’s reply was plain and simple: “The four main Constellation ones are the ones that support full questlines for them and romance.” While some fans may be disappointed in this answer, as this means there are fewer romance options than inSkyrimor Fallout 4, it does hopefully mean there is more depth than in these games. For example, romance inSkyrimis largely reduced to wearing an amulet, proposing to someone, and living out a pseudo-life with a partner. The relevant portion begins at the 24:36-minute mark below.
For the uninitiated,Starfield’s Constellation factionis the primary one tied to the game’s central storyline. They are explorers who are pledged to unlock all the mysteries of the galaxy and answer the question of what’s out there. There is less general exploration by the time ofStarfield, meaning it is one of the last groups of space explorers, and players get tied in with them after discovering an alien artifact. As of this writing,Starfield’s Constellation group is known to consist of leader Sarah Morgan, Barrett, Matteo, Noel, Same Coe, Vasco, Vlad, and Walter. Although unconfirmed, it does seem likely that Howard was referring to Sarah Morgan, Barrett, and Sam Coe at least, based on their roles in the recent Starfield Direct.
It’s good to know how many companions have romance options, but it’s clear many questions still remain about the feature. The general depth is one, as is any possible limitation with romance. It is not confirmed whether theseStarfieldcharacterswill have explicit sexualities, locking off certain romance options based on character choice, or if they are all effectively player-sexual and can be romanced regardless. The latter seems likely based onSkyrimandFallout 4, but it remains unconfirmed as of this writing.
Starfieldis set to release on PC and Xbox Series X/S on September 6.
