Uncharted: The Lost Legacywasofficially launched last week, where it quickly garnered acclaim from critics and fans alike. To celebrate the reception of Naughty Dog’s latest effort, Sony tweeted out a short clip highlighting some of the action found in the game, as well as some selected quotes from critics. However, eagle-eyed gamers noted that the wording used by Sony in the tweet is far more interesting than the highlights, as it suggests that theUnchartedfranchise is not quite done just yet.
In Sony’s tweet aboutUncharted: The Lost Legacy, the caption interestingly features the sentence “the award-winning series continues” as opposed to “the award-winning series concludes,” indicating that the franchise could still continue. This could simply be a choice of wording made by Sony, which also occurred for the marketing forUncharted 4: A Thief’s Endwhen the tagline “one last time” was changed in favor of emphasizing the game as being “the closing chapter for Nathan Drake’s story.”
It is worth noting that Naughty Dog has not yet officially stated that theUnchartedseries is finished, withThe Lost Legacycreative director and writer Shaun Escayg stating a couple of months ago that he didn’t consider the game as"the end" of the franchise.
It would be a surprise if Naughty Dog indeed concluded theUnchartedfranchise given howThe Lost Legacyhas topped sales charts in its first week, which suggests that there is still considerable fan demand for more games. Having said that, don’t expect a new title any time soon, as Naughty Dog is currently busy working on a game from another one of its critically-acclaimed franchises -The Last of Us.
Ever since it was announced during PlayStation Experience 2016,The Last of Us: Part 2has been one of the most highly-anticipated titles among gamers, though it is not yet known when the game will be released. Should theUnchartedfranchise continue to live on, the next game will almost certainly come afterThe Last of Us: Part 2is released, which is still in the early stages of development.
It remains to be seen whether the will be anotherUnchartedgame at some point in the future, especially with Escayg stating thatNaughty Dog intends to move on from the franchisein favor of other projects, thusThe Lost Legacymay be the last game fans will have for quite some time to come.
