AfterSkyrim: Anniversary Editionwas announced, many fans were sharing a memeified version of a classic quotation saying “And Todd Howard wept, seeing as he had no more places to portSkyrim,” but it seems as if Bethesda found one more place for the beloved RPG to live on in a tabletop board game that was announced earlier today. The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim - the Adventure Gameis a reimaging of the game played in a TTRPG fashion made by Modiphius Entertainment that includes extended lore and a prequel story to the main quest ofSkyrim.
Revealed in an interview with Polygon, Modiphius Entertainment game designer Juan Echenique said that the first campaign that players will experience is a story set 25 years beforethe events ofSkyrim’s main quest. Players can expect to run into several familiar faces from the original game, but they’ll be much younger due to the prequel nature of the story.

The second campaign starts justbefore the Dragonborn is discoveredand ends after they’ve arrived meaning that players will be viewing the events of the game in a new perspective as the Dragonborn is an NPC inSkyrim - the Adventure Game. Eventually, players will “cross paths with” the Dragonborn but it’s unclear when that will happen during the events of the main quest.
There hasn’t been a deep dive into the narrative elements of the game’s two major campaigns yet, but, based on the information above,Skyrim - the Adventure Gameseems to be offering a fresh take onthe events ofSkryimwhich have been experienced over and over again with the many different editionsthat have been published over the years. With over 600 cards in its deck, however, the game might seem a little overwhelming for anyone jumping in blind, but its lengthy campaigns aren’t the only way to play it as it can also be experienced in smaller one-off increments.
In addition to the tabletop game,Skyrim: Anniversary Editionis another anticipated release forThe Elder Scrolls 5as it’s adding plenty of new content to the base game. Many of the new additions are coming in the form ofthe Creation Clubmeaning that the new version feels like a celebration ofSkyrim’s community and seems to be a way for Bethesda to be giving back to the fans that made it the gaming touchstone that it is.
Skyrim: Anniversary Editionlaunches on July 27, 2025, for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
