Summary

A fourth mainlineSpyro the Dragongame might be in development at Toys for Bob, at least according to a new rumor. Fans have been itching to see the spunky purple dragon in a starring role once again for a long time, as there hasn’t been a new completely originalSpyrogame sinceThe Legend of Spyro: Dawn of the Dragonway back in 2008. Over the past decade or so, Spyro has been relegated to supporting roles and cameos in titles likeSkylandersandCrash Team Rumble, though fans got to replay his first three adventures thanks to 2018’sSpyro Reignited Trilogy.

The success ofSpyro Reignited Trilogyhas renewed speculation of the former PlayStation mascot making a comeback under the Xbox umbrella, especially after Microsoft purchased Activision Blizzard and, by extension, theSpyro the Dragonfranchise. Back in September, word of afourth mainlineSpyrogamesubtitledMystery of the Dragonstarted to spread across the internet, though it ultimately remained unannounced despite the leaks claiming it would be confirmed in October. More recently, a tweet from an officialSpyro the Dragonsocial media account had gamers buzzing about big news to come in 2024.

ProminentSpyro the DragonandCrash BandicootYouTuber Canadian Guy Eh recently claimed that aSpyro 4is currentlyin development at Toys for Bobin one of his latest videos. He apparently discovered this while attending PAX East 2024, where developers discussed hearing things about the nextSpyrogame. A few days ago, a report came out that Xbox struck a deal with Toys for Bob to fund its next game, which prompted Canadian Guy Eh to reach out to the people he spoke to at PAX East - and one of them seemingly confirmed thatSpyro 4has been in development since January.

Toys for Bob May Be Developing Spyro 4

Of course, this is all just second-hand information at the moment, and fans would be advised to take these claims ofa newSpyro the Dragonsequelwith a grain of salt until a more official confirmation comes along. Toys for Bob, the developer behind the aforementionedSpyro Reignited Trilogyas well as 2020’sCrash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time, announced that it was leaving Activision and becoming an independent studio earlier this year - though it did state that it was hoping to still produce games for former parent company Microsoft under a less restrictive partnership.

The first game thatToys for Bob develops as an indie studiocould very well be the nextSpyro the Dragongame if Canadian Guy Eh’s claims are to be believed. While the laterSpyrotitles grew more divisive as the series went on, there is still plenty of nostalgia for the little purple dragon, and fans are eager to see him take flight in a brand-new adventure following his latest playable appearance inCrash Team Rumble.
