TheResident Evil 2remake was announced years ago, but fans were treated to the first footage of it last night at Sony’s E3 2018 press conference. TheE3 2018 trailerhighlighted many returning characters, showed off remade versions of classic locations, and also featured a small easter egg that references the game’s legacy.
At the start of theResident Evil 2remake trailer shown during Sony’s E3 press conference, we see things from the perspective of a mouse. The mouse is crawling around what appears to be a room in the Raccoon City Police Station, where someone was eating pizza and playing video games before the zombie outbreak. We know this because, slightly obscured by the shadows, we can see an original PlayStation hooked up to a TV.

It’s hard to tell, but it appears as though the PS1 even has a memory card hooked up to it, which just goes to show the level of detail in the trailer. Something else that may amuse fans is that the controller connected to the console is an original PlayStation controller, meaning it has no analog sticks - another subtle but clever touch on the part of Capcom.
The appearance of an original PlayStation is just one way that theResident Evil 2remake is paying homage to the original game. For the most part, it appears to be a faithful recreation, with Leon S. Kennedy, Claire Redfield, and more returning. The game is also bringing back classic monsters, like the lickers, the Mr. X tyrant, and of course, zombies.
Even though theResident Evil 2remake seems to be mostly faithful to the original game, there are some big changes. The most obvious is greatly improved visuals and audio, but it will also be making some changes to the gameplay. Most nostably, theResident Evil 2remake will sport anover-the-shoulder camera likeResident Evil 4, as opposed to the fixed camera angles seen in the original release.
It’s possible that there are other changes in theResident Evil 2remake, but if there are, Capcom hasn’t revealed them yet. We should learn more about the game in the coming months as we near its January release date.
