Wailord is widely accepted as the largest of all Pokemon, with itsPokedex entryclaiming it to be 47 feet and 7 inches long, yet no game has ever accurately portrayed its size in combat or in the overworld.Pokemon Sword and Shieldaim to fix this by showing a full-sized Wailord in the overworld.

Wailord is based on the largest animal on Earth, the Blue Whale, so it is no wonder that the Pokemon is so massive compared to others. That said, its size brings up complications when trying to use it in Pokemon battles in any ofPokemon Sword and Shield’s many indoor battle areas.

Recently, IGN was offered a30-minute demo ofPokemon Sword and Shield’s Isle of Armor expansion, and it was here that the reporter saw the massive Wailord. According to IGN’s Casey DeFreitas, the Wailord was seen in the ocean from one of the Isle of Armor’s beaches.

In almost every game, Wailord is scaled down to match the size of other Pokemon so that it can be used in battles that are in tight spaces and so that the game can actually show the entirety of the Pokemon. The anime and movie adaptations have shown full-size Wailords, but aside fromPokemon Battle Revolution, Wailord has never been scaled properly in aPokemongame.Sword and Shieldfeatures appropriately sized roaming Pokemon, but Wailord is not among them yet, and evensome Gigantamax Pokemonend up being larger than Wailord.

In her report, DeFreitas says that she is unsure whether the Wailord she saw “was a to-scale representation of an overworld Pokemon, or if it was part of the story or had some other purpose.” Nonetheless, Isle of Armor releases in just two days on June 17th so fans don’t have long to wait to find out for themselves. While this might not be a big deal to most,Sword and Shield’sDLCs seem to be putting in some extra effort to add a bit more realismto the game, which is appreciated by many fans.

Hopefully, this massive Wailord sighting isn’t too rare, as it would be very cool to see in-game.Wailord’s size is its claim to fame, so it is unfortunate that it has been misrepresented so much. Perhaps fans will even get to see just how big a Gigantamax Wailord would actually be.

Pokemon Sword and Shield’s Isle of Armor expansion releases this Wednesday, the 17th.
