For those in the know, Pokemon GOFest 2020 is in full swing, where players are able to complete multiple new Research Tasks, catch elusivenew and shiny Pokemon, and battle it out with members of Team GO Rocket. In addition to all of this new content, Matt Slemon, the project lead onPokemon GO, did an interview on new features coming to the game including a level cap increase to 50, as well as new details about Mega Evolutions.

Mega Evolutions have been a topic of discussion inPokemon GO’s player base a lot recently. In a recent datamine, players found a new loading screenthat featured multiple new Pokemon including Mega Charizard X, seemingly confirming that Mega Evolutions would be coming to the game.

However, it doesn’t seem like players shouldn’t get too excited about the feature coming to the game soon. In an interview forPokemon GOFest 2020, project lead Matt Slemon gave new details about Mega Evolutions coming to the game saying, “Yeah, we’re really excited for Mega Evolution. It’s been really important to us as developers and fans of the franchise to get this one right. So it’s something that we’ve been spending time on.”

He went on to say, “One thing I can confirm is that your existing Pokemon today will be the ones that will be Mega Evolved. So the Charizard you got at the very beginning of the game – your first Charmander or the one that you evolved – those are all viable candidates. They can all be Mega Evolved.” These details seem to be counter to earlier reports suggesting that players would have tocapture the Mega versions of their favorite Pokemon in the wildseparately from the ones they already own.

Slemon also talked about the upcoming level cap increase from 40 to 50. While not giving away too much, he said the team wants to implement some kind of changebeyond just the typical grind of XPas players make their way from Level 41 to 50. He went on to say that the team will be giving more details about this later this year.

It’s good to see thatPokemon GOwill be allowing its players to Mega Evolve using their current Pokemon, rather than having to catch new ones.Pokemon SwordandShieldsaw some backlash with Gigantamaxing when players found out they would need to capture new versions of Pokemon they already owned in order to get the Gigantamax form. To remedy this, a new way of obtaining Gigantamax Pokemon was added in theIsle of Armor DLC through the Max Soupitem. Hopefully, players will have an easier time gaining access to Mega Evolutions when it finally comes to the game.

Pokemon GOis available now on iOS and Android devices.
