Spiritomb, like other Ghost-type Pokemon, has a floaty, ethereal appearance that’s hard to replicate in real-life. What better way to try, then, than bringing the spookyghost-type Pokemonto life as a hologram?

Ghost-type Pokemon have been fan favorites since their introduction inPokemonRedandBlue, with new creatures being added to the list in nearly every mainline series entry. The series' ghosts have seen endless recreations in real life in the form of art, Build-a-Bears, and more, but seeing aPokemonhologram is rather unusual.

That didn’t stop YouTuber BigRig Creates from making it a reality, though. BigRig Creates shows the process of setting up a hologram fan. This type of fan is designed to display images through a combination of the fan blades' movement and LEDs. Its rapid oscillations allow it to produce a moving, transparent image. BigRig selects two different appearances for Spiritomb, with one perfectly recreating its 2D game appearance, and another giving it a more realistic, 3D appearance, based off its look inPokemon GO’s AR mode.

BigRig Creates then walks viewers through the process of how they created the ghostly Spiritomb. Spiritomb’s odd keystone is crafted as a physical prop, by pulling the official 3D model and then modifying it to support the image-projecting fan. After he was satisfied with the design, he used a 3D printer to produce it, with it taking 30 hours just to produce the basic keystone. Once everything’s printed, BigRig carefully sands, paints, and assembles the base so that it can hold the fan.

The final product is very impressive, and would likely be a striking decoration to have in anyPokemonfan’s home. It’s easy to imagine this same technology being used to bring well-known ghost-types like Haunter to life. These holographic fans are becoming more popular in the cosplay and fanart hobbies, and it’s neat to see one used to bring a hovering, transparent Pokemon into the real world. While there’s nothing wrong withplush recreations of Pokemonand solid PVC toys, this is about as close as anyone can get to seeing a ghost-type Pokemon in real life.

Pokemon’s popularity hasn’t budged in the years since it became a worldwide phenomenon. Fans of the series have reproduced the series' Pokemon, trainers, and locales in remarkable detail in nearly every artistic medium around, including some unusual ones, like aPikachu laser artpiece. However, it’s likely exciting for long-time fans of the series to see something like this. This kind of visual illusion couldn’t have been created by a fan or hobbyist when the first games came out. Spiritomb’s appearance as a hologram vastly surpasses what imagery the games were capable of producing of in their early years, too. It will be interesting to see what creative methodsPokemonfans use in the years to come as the series continues to gather attention with new entries likePokemonLegends: Arceus.
