Summary

Overwatch 2recently unveiled a wealth of details for Season 10, which is appropriately titled “Venture Forth.” These include but aren’t limited toa Mirrorwatch-themed battle pass, adjustments to competitive play, and, in a major move, all heroes being immediately unlocked. Based on these adjustments, it seems Blizzard is taking care to address past concerns while introducing fresh new changes to keep its player base engaged.

However, despite the optimism surroundingOverwatch 2’s 10th season, criticisms surrounding the hero shooter are still abundant. With the various layoffs at Blizzard at the beginning of the year and the rumored cancelation of future PvE plans, there’s been speculation that Team 4 may have released its Mercy Mythic skin early. Considering that Season 9’s Mythic went to Moira, another support character inOverwatch 2, it does seem that Mercy’s Mythic skin has been conveniently timed.

Overwatch 2 Deploying The Mercy Skin in Season 10 Has Its Pros and Cons

Mercy’s Mythic Skin Debuting Now Is An Unexpected Surprise

Although the order ofMythic skins inOverwatch 2isn’t entirely predictable, Blizzard has typically avoided releasing them for the same character role consecutively. Previously, Mythic skins have been distributed more evenly among tanks, damage dealers, and supports:

While aMercy Mythic skin seemed like a matter of time, it’s surprising that Blizzard has opted to use its trump card so soon. After all, Mercy’s status as a fan-favorite hero is well-known, and her past cosmetic releases have consistently done well. With projections that Season 10 would see a DPS Mythic following Season 8’s Orisa and Season 9’s Moira, Mercy’s Vengeance Mythic skin was undoubtedly an unexpected addition.

Mercy’s Mythic Skin Could Be Serving More Than One Purpose

The announcement of a customizable Mythic tier skin for Mercy at this point could suggest Blizzard has bigger plans for this prestigious cosmetic. Not only is it a flashy cosmetic for support players, but it’s coming out at the same time asOverwatch 2’s Mythic Shop.

According to Blizzard, the Mythic Shop will allow players with a premium battle pass to select any Mythic skin from a past season, so skins like Cyber Demon Genji and Zeus Junker Queen will be accessible again. Due to this, some have called Mercy’s Mythic an “infinite money generator” for Blizzard, seeing as players will be able to unlock her every season if they purchase the premium track of the battle pass.

Furthermore, withOverwatch 2’s 10th season facing a lot of pressure, it could be that Team 4 is strategically releasing Mercy’s Mythic skin to appease players in light of some less well-received announcements. For example, if this turns out to be true, players could be at least temporarily satiated by the long-awaited cosmetic. Interestingly, now that Blizzard has used its “break in case of emergency” Mythic Skin, future seasons will likely heavily emphasize new characters, maps, and events over the Mythic.
