The commercial itself shows Awkwafina going about her daily routine while playing a variety of different titles on the Nintendo Switch. First, viewers see Awkwafina procrastinating in her dressing roomwithAnimal Crossing: New Horizonsbefore shooting a scene. The commercial shows Awkwafina taking the Switch to various locations in handheld mode before ultimately coming home and putting it in the dock. The commercial ends with a funMario Kart 8 Deluxeonline race where the loser must don a real-life toad costume.

Readers can likely assume who winds up wearing the toad costume at the end of the commercial. All in all, the commercial is a light, fun way to advertise the Nintendo Switch’s unique qualities before the holiday rush. Considering that the Xbox Series X andPS5 just launched last week, Nintendo is going to have to put in a bit of extra work to ensure the Switch stays afloat. The Switch doesn’t have the same power output or graphical fidelity that both the Xbox Series X and PS5 boast, but it has an incredible library of exclusive titles and portability that sets it apart from its competition.

As mentioned above, this isn’t the only Nintendo commercial featuring a celebrity that Nintendo has released recently.Nintendo also partnered with actress Brie Larsonto shoot a commercial similar to Awkwafina’s. Larson’s commercial also showcases the Switch’s unique functionality, and games likeAnimal CrossingandFortnite, while also demonstrating some of the more diverse applications that the Switch features, like playingRing-Fit Adventureand using the Ring-Con controller to play various mini-games.

Larson has been vocal in the past about her love of video games, even partnering with Nintendo topromoteAnimal Crossing: New Horizonsback in March. While Awkwafina hasn’t spoken too much in the past about her history with video games, she recently spoke to People Magazine about her collaboration with Nintendo. In the interview, she talks about her love ofDonkey Kong Countryon the SNES, as well asSuper Mario 64and the GameBoy. Awkwafina caps off her interview essentially saying that more and more people are finally realizing that video games can be for everyone. It’s a nice message that really encapsulates what the Nintendo Switch is all about.
