The New Mutantshas yet another release date, but this time Disney swears it’s coming out for real. A new piece of IMAX artwork claims the movie will finally be shown in theaters this month, August 28. The film has been delayed repeatedly going all the way back to 2018, but it seems this date might be the real deal after all.

In a show of commitment, the artwork was released with a relevant press release, boasting that “The IMAX release ofThe New Mutantswill be digitally re-mastered into the image and sound quality The IMAX Experience® with proprietary IMAX DMR® (Digital Re-mastering) technology.” An appealing offer for those willing to pay the increased IMAX price on top of braving the ongoing pandemic.

It’s been a long, strange journey forThe New Mutants. It began as a project set in Fox’s X-Men universe, only to end up being a rare survivor of the studios merger with Disney. While most of Fox’s other films were killed off as a result,The New Mutants, being close to completion, was allowed to schedule a release, with a big question mark hanging over its connection to any other Marvel continuities. After several years of delays due to both production difficulties and Coronavirus concerns, it was revealed that thestudio was contractually obligated to release the film in theaters, explaining why the movie wasn’t simply released straight to VOD.

Despite all of that, the film has drawn a new line in the sand for this August, and with only two weeks until release, it’d likely be difficult to back out this time. For those interested, the synopsis goes like this: The film is set in “an isolated hospital where a group of young mutants is being held for psychiatric monitoring. When strange occurrences begin to take place, both their new mutant abilities and their friendships will be tested as they battle to try and make it out alive.” While Disney’s plans for the characters and brand are currently up in the air, the film itself hashad quite a few teasers and trailersover the years, which give off a very different, horror-oriented tone compared to typical Marvel projects. For those interested in a different kind of comic book movie (and who have access to a safe, socially distant movie theater)The New Mutantsmay be something to check out in just a few weeks.

The New Mutantsplans to hit theaters on August 28. For realsies.
