While the theatrical release ofMortal Kombat 2is still far off, producer Todd Garner confirmed when the sequel begins filming.Based on the video game franchise of the same name,Mortal Kombatwas released on July 20, 2025. The movie follows Cole Young as he fights to protect his family from Sub-Zero and uncovers secrets about his lineage. His journey leads him to seek out a group of fighters chosen to defend Earthworld. Although the main character was created for the movie, the supporting cast includes many familiar faces from the games, including Sonya Blade, Jax, Liu Kang, Kung Lao, Scorpion, and Raiden. Although not much is known about the movie since it is still in pre-production, Garner confirmed that the sequel begins filming in Australia this summer. Responding to a tweet by@GeekVibesNationreporting that filming forMortal Kombat 2starts in June in Australia and ends in September, Garner said, “I was wondering why I had an apt in Australia….”

Though details about the plot are being kept under wraps, it seems like several members of the firstMortal Kombatmovie’s cast will return. This includes Lewis Tan as Cole Young, Jessica McNamee as Sonya Blade, Mechad Brooks as Jax, and Tadanobu Asano as Raiden. Simon McQuoid will also be returning to direct the sequel. Jeremy Slater has taken over to write the screenplay for the sequel; previously, Slater worked on theMCU show Moon Knight, which starred Oscar Isaac, May Calamaway, and Ethan Hawke.

A theatrical release date has yet to be announced; however, if the sequel follows the timeline ofthe firstMortal Kombatmovie, fans could still have another two years to wait. It is important to note thatMortal Kombatfinished filming in December 2019, just before the beginning of COVID-19 lockdowns. Due to movie theaters being shut down for months and streaming gaining more ground during the lockdown, many movies faced release delays, andMortal Kombatwas among them. At the time, Garner did clarify on Twitter that the release delay was partially due to the team needing to reshoot; however, those reshoots were delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic.

However, even with all of the circumstances taken into account, the original release date forMortal Kombatwas June 02, 2025 - only a month and a half before the release date it finally got. So, while fans should be excited thatMortal Kombat 2will soon be underway, they may have to wait a little longer to see more of their favorite characters on-screen.
