Ever since its establishment back in 2010, NetherRealm Studios has been known for its fighting games such as theMortal Kombatand theInjusticeseries. NetherRealm has a strong footing in the fighting genre, but now, a recent job listing seems to suggest that studio head Ed Boon and his team may finally be up to something new.
The job listing was posted on LinkedIn a couple of months ago, for the position of Senior Artist/Animator. Aside from the usual requirements that come with the job, NetherRealm is also looking for people with “experience in developing martial arts fighting games,” and “experience in developing first-person action games.” As of the moment, the particular game where the position is needed wasn’t revealed, but at least we know that the studio is working on a new project.

Of course, given that fighting games comprise the majority of the studio’s portfolio, it makes sense that NetherRealm is looking for experienced animators in the genre. However, it is interesting to know why the studio is looking for someone with experience in first-person action games. For the past years, NetherRealm has been alternating between theMortal KombatandInjusticefranchises. Now, sinceInjustice 2was just released last year, it is safe to assume that the next game in the studio’s docket will most likely beMortal Kombat 11. But a first-personMortal Kombatgame would be a change of pace, to say the least.
NetherRealm has been silent on the project that it is currently developing. However, the rumor mill began turning a few weeks ago that the studio willreveal a newMortal Kombatgame during The Game Awardsthis week. The speculation originated from a 4chan post by someone who claims to be a QA tester. As always, fans are advised to take rumors such as this lightly, given that no official confirmation was made by the developer.
Still, it would be nice if the rumor about a possibleMortal Kombat 11announcement at the Game Awards would turn out to be true especially after the disappointment whenthe game wasn’t unveiled at E3 2018. Luckily players only have to wait for a few days until The Game Awards on December 6 to find out if the rumors are true.
