Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreakis right around the corner, releasing in just over a month’s time, and it looks set to be one of the most exciting DLCs of the year. Along with a massive new environment, filled with a variety of biomes, new skills, new weapons, and new missions,Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreakis also bringing a plethora of new monsters to the game. While the upcomingroster features both new and returning goliaths like Seregios, the heavily-marketed Three Lords are by far some of the most anticipated monsters coming with the expansion.

These Three Lords consist of theFrankenstein’s Monster-inspired Garangolm, the werewolf-inspired Lunagaron, and the flagship monster of theSunbreakexpansion, Malzeno, heavily inspired by European depictions of vampires. Though not all of their movesets have been detailed just yet, more information is being released every week, and the more fans get to see of these Three Lords, the more they’re looking forward to facing off against the behemoths. But taking on these beasts won’t be an easy feat, especially with abilities like Malzeno’s Bloodblight attack.

How Malzeno’s Bloodblight Attack Works

Being heavily inspired bythe Western vampire mythos, Malzeno’s attacks seem to be all based around typical vampiric powers. Malzeno’s Bloodblight attack, in particular, takes this vampire inspiration and wears it proudly on its scaly sleeve. During the heat of battle, players might notice red light emanating from the dragon, which indicates that Malzeno’s about to use Bloodblight.

Once initiated, this attack will reduce the player’s natural HP recovery and will lower the effectiveness of healing items for a certain duration of time. On top of this, while Bloodblight is active, the player’s health will be gradually drained, leaving them vulnerable to getting one shot by just about any ofMalzeno’s powerful attacks.

Monster Hunter Rise Malzeno

To put a stop to Malzeno’s Bloodblight, players will need to get a little more aggressive and turn their attention to dishing out damage of their own. For every hit that the player lands on Malzeno, they’ll gain back a portion of health relative to how much damage they’ve inflicted, much likeBloodborne’s Rally mechanic, which rewards players with gaining back some of their health if they land a hit on an opponent who has just damaged them.

If Malzeno’s Bloodblight attack is allowed to continue and enough of the player’s HP is drained, the slender dragon will be able to evolve. Once evolved, Malzeno becomes even more powerful, unleashing a handful of even more devastating attacks at an even faster rate. It’s vital that hunters stop Malzeno’s Bloodblight as soon as they can.

Malzeno’s Other Attacks

Along with Bloodblight, a few of Malzeno’s other attacks have also been showcased in recentMonster Hunter Rise: Sunbreaktrailers. In a cinematic trailer, Malzeno’s Roar attack is showcased, which will likely function similarly to other monsters' roar attack, stunning the player temporarily. Malzeno also seems to have a tail grab move, where he launches an opponent into the air, grabs them with his tail, and slams them visciously into the ground.

Malzeno’s tail is also capable of being thrust into the player, which seems to inflict Bloodblight upon successful hits. As should be expected ofa dragon-type monster, Malzeno also comes equipped with some breath attacks. Though the specific element it spews isn’t known yet, Malzeno breathes a red substance on its opponents, which damages them and eventually culminates in a small series of explosions. Malzeno has also been seen to use lunge at the player with its mouth, attempting to bite them.

Monster Hunter Riseis available now for PC and Switch. Its Sunbreak expansion launches on June 03, 2025.
