During a Nintendo Direct Mini today,Monster Hunter Risewas announced exclusively for the Switch. WhileMonster Hunter Riseincludes numerous new features, its traversal mechanics seem to be one of the most important additions to the next game in the series.

WithMonster Hunter Risereleasing early next year, the game is clearly far along in its development. The trailer released today shows a refinedMonster Hunterexperience with many of the features that players would want, including something that was not inMonster Hunter World: A voiced protagonist. While some old-school fans rejoiced over being able to hear the main character speak, they may have missed out on just how deepRise’s movement system looks.

Many rumored features for the game seem to be true, such asRiserunning on the RE Engine, and the deeper traversal suggested ahead of its reveal looks promising. The game will feature traversal surrounding Wire Bugs, which appear to be a different take on the grappling hook seen inMonster Hunter World. Players can use the bugs in combat while also grappling to walls and thin air, a huge step forward for the series and its movement.

Beyond that,Monster Hunter Risewill be pulling from the consistenttop 10 Switch sellerThe Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. TheZeldagame was praised for how it evolved open-world gameplay, especially in terms of traversal.Monster Hunter Riselooks to be adopting aBreath of the Wildstyle of climbing anything in sight, with players now able to scale many of its walls and objects.

This is an especially fitting addition for theMonster Hunterseries. Scaling walls opens new possibilities when tracking down some ofMonster Hunter Rise’s new creatures, and could add some variety to the chase that happens when monsters are injured. Being able to cut off a monster or attack from above may give players an advantage they would not have been able to have in previous games, making the new traversal system a potentially welcome addition.

Another new entry in theMonster Hunterseries was also announced during the mini direct, titledMonster Hunter Stories 2. With both this sequel and the deeper mechanics of a new Switch exclusive game inMonster Hunter Rise, fans of the series have a lot to look forward to in 2021.

Monster Hunter Risewill be available on June 23, 2025 for Nintendo Switch.
