It is all but confirmed thatCall of Duty: Modern Warfare 4will be this year’s entry in theCall of Dutyfranchise. Infinity Ward, the developer behind theModern Warfaregames, hasteased the gamemultiple times, and it seems as if all that’s left is an official announcement.
In the run-up to an official announcement for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, there has been a lot of speculation and at least one previous leak about what the game may offer fans. One game mode that may be missing from the much-rumored shooter is theBlackout battle royale modethat made its debut inCall of Duty: Black Ops 4.
Speaking toGaming Intel, anonymous sources claim thatModern Warfare 4will ditch Blackout battle royale and will offer a single-player campaign, multiplayer, and co-op game modes. This follows previous rumors thatModern Warfare 4would feature asingle-player campaignafter Treyarch decided not to feature it inBlack Ops 4.
The sources also say thatCall of Duty: Modern Warfare 4won’t featureSpecialists characters. Specialists are characters that have special skills and abilities unique to them and they also have backstories attached to them.
However,Modern Warfare 4will feature standard playable characters in its multiplayer. This suggests that there will only be weapons and no character abilities. Specialists do offer another tactical element to the series' multiplayer, but some may appreciate thatModern Warfare 4’s multiplayer will be going back to its roots.
As with any unsubstantiated rumor, fans should take this information with a grain of salt. The sources are anonymous and the information stated in the report hasn’t been confirmed by either Infinity Ward or (series publisher) Activision. It also conflicts with a previous leak which suggested thatModern Warfare 4’s battle royale mode would feature amap covered in snowand Captain Price, Ghost, and Soap as playable characters.
However, a shift to more traditionalCall of Dutygameplay could be a good business idea. The community hasn’t responded entirely positively to the decision to ditch single-player and add Specialists. Blackout battle royale has been received better, but it hasn’t generated attention on the same par of games likeFortnite,PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds, orApex Legends.
This also wouldn’t be the first time that theCall of Dutyseries reverted to a more traditional gameplay style and setting after an adventurous title proved controversial.Call of Duty: WW2followed thedivisiveCall of Duty: Infinite Warfare, and it’s possible thatCall of Duty: Modern Warfare 4will be the same counter toCall of Duty: Black Ops 4.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4has yet to be officially announced.
