In a world where fans scrutinize every release from a celebrity—and often with good reason since PR companies started doing “soft launches,” that is to say letting details slip in a picture, for example, before an official release date to whet fan’s appetites—so it’s no wonder entertainment media types have taken to poring over every picture a celebrity release to get new superhero movie updates, especially for a character likeBatman.James Gunn, half of the team now heading DC, learned this the hard way when he began “the saga of the holiday cheese plate,” a three-tweet arcthat saw him having to issue another denial for rampant fan speculation.Related:DCU: 5 Characters We Want To See James Gunn And Peter Safran Adapt For The ScreenJames Gunn and Peter Safran are set to release what they have planned for the upcoming DC slate early this year, but some entertainment journalists (or podcasters) will never let them rest until even that early launch date hits, deciding to comb over their social media postslike Charlie trying to discover Pepe SilviainIt’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia. To this end, James Gunn posted a simple picture of a holiday cheese platter taken in his own home. Rather than be satisfied with a nice picture of mouth-watering cheese and salami, they enhanced until they were able to make out a small stack of books on a back table. That stack? Omnibuses of Grant Morrison’sBatmanrun.
While Gunn admitted to liking Morrison’s runs with bothBatmanandSuperman, he denied that the upcoming announcement for the DC slate was going to be based on a couple of collections he had set aside on a back table. Gunn has learned something of how to handle denials of late, recently batting away news he called fake during false reporting thathe and Safran were stripping away theGreen Lanternfrom Greg Berlantiand prepping the character for his return to the big screen. ThisBatmansituation is a “Same day, different hero,” scenario since news sites refuse to sit idly by until the official announcement is made.
What is known about DC’s current Batman work is fairly easy. Todd Phillips is getting to make hisJokersequel with Joaquin Phoenix (with Lady Gaga set to play Harley Quinn) and Matt Reevesis getting to continue the world he built inThe Batman, his well-received Robert Pattinson origin story. Michael Keaton, whose work inBatgirlwill never be seen since that film was canned, is still rumored to appear in the upcoming Ezra Miller movie,The Flash. Ben Affleck has gone the way of Henry Cavill. And so far that’s all the available news onBatmanthat’s out there until James Gunn and Peter Safran tell fans what to look forward to very shortly.
DC hasn’t revealed a newBatmanfor the upcoming slate yet.
