Jackbox Party Pack 10is a reason to celebrate the franchise, which has grown exponentially over the years, but Jackbox Games isn’t one to rest on its laurels. While the new Pack will include asequel in Tee KO 2and includes oft-recurringelements like a trivia gameinTimeJinx, it’s not afraid to try new things either.Dodo Re Miis the first music-rhythm game for the franchise, and it’s as zany as one would expect.
The premise is simple: players' phones/controller are their instruments, they are birds making wild noises, and they are trying to stay out of the stomach of a carnivorous plant. When a song is over, there is a playback demonstrating how well, or how not well, everyone performed, and unlike many othertraditionalJackbox Party Packgames, players can end after one song, they can end after two songs, or so forth. There is no typical round structure inDodo Re Mi, and if there’s anything clear about the title, it’s that it’s not traditional. Game Rant recently spoke with several developers at Jackbox Games, includingDodo Re Midirector Brooke Breit, who has worked there sinceJackbox Party Pack 5and previously directedJob, JobandRoomerang. Breit described directing those games as “so different from my experience this year withDodo Re Mi.”

To create the music ofDodo Re Mi,Jackbox Games' audio team went out to Central Michigan University and had day-long recording sessions, and a contrabassoon is an instrument that caught Breit’s attention. No doubt, music aficionados will enjoy the various instruments in the game, whether the contrabassoon is included or not, but things like guitars and drums have already been confirmed. During our conversation though, Breit name-dropped a couple more sounds and “instruments” fans can expect from the game.
For example, there is an instrument seen in theDodo Re Mireveal trailer forJackbox Party Pack 10that mimics cat noises dubbed Taz the Cat. Simple, silly instruments like kazoos are included, but just like the trailer showed off Constant Screaming as a viable instrument, players can also use a “Lip Flipper.” This “instrument,” as evident by the name, is the burbling sound that one elicits when rubbing their index finger over their lips up and down. And somewhere, somehow inDodo Re Mi,there is a sound effect that was created by earwax. What that sounds like remains to be seen for now, left only to the comedy-horror imagination. As described by Breit,
“These are not traditional instruments that we thought would be a lot of fun to explore in this kind of space. It is meant to be very silly, very interactive…In addition to music being something new for us, we did sound effects with earwax, which is a really cool and surprisingly popular sound when we played it.”
Dodo Re Mi Instruments and Sounds
When players dive intoDodo Re Mi, they might pick an instrument based on how it sounds, what it’s like to have a group of Kazoos being played, or simply because the name, like Lip Flipper, is inherently funny. And while this sounds out there, it’s really not by Jackbox Games standards. As Breit put it, “My answer, usually, for any of our creative choices is why not?” And that answer outlines every silly expectation fans can have forDodo Re Miandevery game coming inJackbox Party Pack 10.
Jackbox Party Pack 10will release on all major platforms in Fall 2023.
