Mount & Blade 2: Bannerlordhas no limitation to how a player decides to build their army.Each faction has its own troopsthat can all be upgraded in various trees, with additional smaller options being recruited when defeating bandits, or hiring mercenaries.

Mercenaries are their own sub-faction of soldiers and can be hired anytime. Mercenaries, for the most part, will function identically to the rest of your troops but can offer some higher-tier options early on for those in need of powerful soldiers.

How To Recruit Mercenary Troops In Mount & Blade 2: Bannerlord

Mercenaries are recruited in the Tavern of most major citiesthroughout the world. Enter a major city, and select, “Go to the tavern district” to open up the tavern menu. If there are mercenaries to recruit, the number and type of mercenaries will appear along with the cost to hire them. Their initial cost to be recruited will be much higher than regular troops, but they will also often be a higher tier than normal faction units players can get early on.

Mercenary troops will also have a different salary than other troops, which is displayed in the Expected Change menu whenhovering over your Denar totalin the bottom right of the screen. Theday-to-day cost for mercenaries will often be higher than other troops of the same tier,but it does offer players the ability to get higher-tier troops early into the game. As a playthrough goes on, it is best to use fewer and fewer mercenaries as their additional cost will slowly add up.

How To Recruit Mercenary Armies To Your Kingdom

Should you decide to make your own kingdom, you can hire one of the many mercenary armies of the world to fight alongside you. Aftercreating your own kingdom in Mount & Blade 2: Bannerlord, you’ll need to wander around and find a mercenary party in the overworld. Most mercenaries will already be joined up with another faction, and youcan’t recruit them if they are already sworn elsewhere.

To identify a mercenary army, look for a banner icon that doesn’t match an existing faction. If you’re not sure and have a larger army than the mercenary party, approach them and talk to them, if they are already serving somewhere, you can back out of the conversation without a battle. When talking with a free mercenary army, select, “There is something I wish to discuss” and one of the available options will be to serve your kingdom.
