Summary

In the Wizarding World ofHarry Potter, bringing up the topic of muggles in a conversation seems to make or break people’s relationships. Moreover, the topic of associating oneself with, or even, marrying muggles or muggle-borns. Especially before the downfall of Lord Voldemort, there were a lot of negative stigmas around muggles and muggle-borns.

InHarry Potter, many pure-blood families believe in “blood purity”, and force their beliefs on their children. These supremacist notions were very rampant within families who went as far as marrying their relatives, to keep the pride of being in the elite. However, there is a minority of pure-blood wizards and witches who don’t care about this extremist value and marry the person they love.

More Than Harry’s First Love

Cho Chang was a true Ravenclaw. She was a hard worker, a good student-athlete, and a kind-hearted, beautiful person who won over not one, but two popular students at Hogwarts; Cedric Diggory and Harry Potter. Unfortunately, she lost Cedric during their fifth year as he passed away, and her relationship with Harry went sour after Marietta Edgecombe’s betrayal of Dumbledore’s Army (in the book).

However, it does not change the fact that Cho Chang has always been against discrimination, andshe later married a muggle. It is not known if Cho Chang still has frequent depressive episodes in her later life due to Cedric’s passing, but hopefully, her muggle-husband will be understanding of it.

The Different Black Sister

As a descendant of the Black House, there is a certain expectation that is given by the family to marry well within the pure-blood community. This expectation is also experiencedby the Black sisters; Bellatrix, Andromeda, and Narcissa. Although Bellatrix and Narcissa married another pure-blood, and seem to be comfortable with continuing the pure-blood supremacy, Andromeda is the odd one out.

She never believed in discrimination, and after she graduated from Hogwarts, she married a muggle-born wizard, Edward “Ted" Tonks. She was also associated with the Order of the Phoenix, lending her house as a safe house, although she was never an official member herself.

The Hopeless Romantic

Merope Gaunt is a case where a pure-blood witch is almost driven to insanity by her toxic and abusive family. As a victim of abuse, she laterbewitched a handsome mugglewhom she later married and had a child with. She was a direct descendant of Salazar Slytherin and a parseltongue, but her abuse left her scarred for life and even refused to use magic after her husband woke up from the bewitchment.

Her obsessive love for Tom Riddle also proved that she did not care about blood purity, as she had to endure a lot of wrongdoings from her pure-blood family. It is also proven that marrying only within pure-blood families is very risky for inbreeding, and it will affect one’s mental and physical health.
