Players start out fighting alone inGriftlands, but they can gather allies to fight as a team. That said, most companions are either temporary hires or friends helping out, again temporarily. Just about the only permanent companions are pets. Pets are weaker than most companions, but can be trained to become stronger. Here’s a quick guide to training pets to make them more deadly inGriftlands.

The Nature of Pets

Pets inGriftlandsare primarily combat beasts. Unlikethe pets ofAmong Usand other games that have them as cosmetic companions, pets inGriftlandsare there to rip, tear, and take hits for the player. They typically don’t have a ton of HP and will flee if it gets too low, so keep them safe when possible. This is doubly true of a trained pet, which is even more valuable.

Sal’s Event

The first and easiest way to train pets is only available to Sal. If Sal has a pet, which she may obtain through an event or by buying one from Phroluk of the Beasts, she may encounter an event. Said event can let her either heal her pet or train it. Once trained, the pet provides a stable, damage dealing argument in all negotiations. It’s also tougher and hits harder in combat. There’s no cost to train the pet through the event, but no guarantee that it will pop up either. Still, a properly trained pet can mean the difference between life or death whenfighting Kashioat the end of Sal’s story, so it’s worth taking the event if it shows up.

Other Characters

While the other characters inGriftlands, Rook and Smith, can obtain pets through events, they cannot train them regularly. Neither one of them can find the event Sal can that lets her train a pet for free. However, players can unlock the Tier 1 perk Innate Connection and equip it in one of the three perk slots. While equipped, this perk instantly trains any pet obtained, putting them on par withthe best pets ofSkyrim. True, a perk slot is a high price, but it’s reliable.

Upgrading Pets

Beyond training, pets can also be upgraded. This gives them a different appearance as well as constant armor. As anyWorld of WarcraftHunter will tell, a rare petis worth its weight in gold, and inGrifltandsputting more gold on that pet makes it even better. Phroluk is the only way to upgrade pets, but he’s only regularly available in Sal’s story. If he shows up while playing as Rook or Smith, consider it a blessing.

Griftlandsis out now for PC, PS4, Xbox One, and Switch.
