Last week, it was confirmed thatPS4 exclusiveDeath Strandingis heading to PC next year. The news set gamers buzzing, leading to discussion about what other PlayStation 4-exclusive games could and should be released for other platforms. And for many, the game at the top of that list is one of the console’s biggest successes,God of War.
It’s safe to say 2018’s sequel/semi-rebootranks among theGod of Warseries’ best games, and even among the best games in general. With its deeper story, memorable characters, RPG elements, and reworked combat, it took what fans loved about the series, cut out much of what they didn’t, and forged its own identity in the process. This resulted in near-universal acclaim, several awards, and some of the best sales figures of any PS4 game.
That’s why people took notice when Cory Barlog, the game’s director, offered up his two cents on the matter ofDeath Stranding’s PC announcement. A recent Twitter prompt asked users if the game’s non-exclusivity matters, and Barlog replied by writing, “Not in the least.” This then led to him being asked about the possibility ofGod of Warmaking its way onto PC one day. To which he answered, “You know, I would love that. It is, sadly, a decision far above my paygrade. As is proven on a daily basis, I am no Kojima.”

While he probably mostly said that as a joke, it is true that Barlog is not in much of a position currently to undoGod of War’s PS4 exclusivity, since, unlikeDeath Stranding’s director, Hideo Kojima, he doesn’t run his own independent studio that’s not bound by platform restrictions. Also, just as a reminder,God of Waris a Sony-owned franchise, andone of Sony’s best-sellingat that. It’s hardly likely that Sony would release the game for a platform it doesn’t have full control over. In short, an official PC port ofGod of Warisn’t likely any time soon.
But that might just ultimately be a moot point, because, technically,God of Waris already playable on PC. Last month, Sony added the game to its PlayStation Now service, which enables players to stream it to either their PS4s or PCs. This is only a temporary deal, however, as Sony plans to remove the game from the service in January 2020, with the intention of bringing it back after an unspecified amount of time.
Other than that, the future ofGod of Warremains a mystery. From the looks of it, gamers are bound to get aGod of Warsequel sooner or later, most likely for the PlayStation 5 arriving next year. Alas, details remain scant on that front, so players can only speculate aboutwhat to expect from Kratos and his boy Atreus in the nextGod of Wargame.
