Ghost of Tsushimamay get multiplayer in the future. One of the game’s co-directors, Nate Fox, confirmed that the possibility does exist. Although, how the title would implement multiplayer wasn’t touched on. Fox just confirmed that Sucker Punch —Ghost of Tsushima’s developer — could be open to the idea.
The confirmation comes by way of a recent interview Fox had with VentureBeat’s Dean Takahashi. The duo discussed what went intoGhost of Tsushima’s development, and how the decisions Sucker Punch made helped propel the game into the success its become. At the very end of the Q&A, Takahashi asked the unexpected question of whether or not Sucker Punch had ever thought of implementing multiplayer into the title.

The response Fox gave was both predictable and unexpected. Predictable because he explained that Sucker Punch’s goal withGhost of Tsushimawas to focus on the evolution of Jin Sakai, which is obvious because the game is a narrative-driven, single-player title. What was unexpected about the response was that Fox ended it with “who knows what the future holds?”
“We were always very focused on telling this one story of Jin’s transformation. It’s inherently a single-player experience. But who knows what the future holds?”
Being the story-driven game it is,Ghost of Tsushimadoesn’t offer a lot in terms of replayability. Like many games similar to it, Ghost of Tsushima has received a post-launch update that provided it with a greater difficulty setting calledLethal Mode. However, things like this still only offer finite experiences.
Multiplayer would give the game the longevity a single-player experience just can’t offer, andGhost of Tsushima’s gameplay certainly supports it. Jin fights multiple opponents with allies all the time, so it wouldn’t be impossible to implement. Sucker Punch could add it asGhost of TsushimaDLC, but it would make more sense if it instead did it in aGhost of Tsushimasequel, one developed with the feature in mind.
The question is whether or notSucker Punchshould add multiplayer toGhost of Tsushima. Not every single-player game needs to have multiplayer features to be memorable. Some gamers are fine with just having a single-player experience they can sit down with and have all to themselves, especially ones likeGhost of Tsushima, where it’s easy to tell that the game’s resources and attention went into its story and world-building. Loads of multiplayer-centered titles get released nowadays anyway, so single-player games can be considered breaths of fresh air. Still, multiplayer in a single-player focused game never hurts if its executed right.
