New leaks suggest thatFortnitewill be making a cosmetic change to the island map in celebration of International Women’s Day. March 8 marks International Women’s Day as a day to be thankful and supportive of the women in society who have led to so much progress and prosperity over the years. In the gaming industry, women make up over 50% of the core demographic, and are the dominant player base forfranchises likeApex LegendsandMass Effect.Fortnitehas also had its fair share of iconic women appear throughout the game, and not just when talking about their original characters that appear in the game through both the item shop and the various Battle Passes. And now, for International Women’s Day, it has been is confirmed through a new leak that the island will see a small change in celebration of International Women’s Day.

Revealed by FortTory on Twitter, Epic Games will be changing the map sky-box on theFortniteisland when the daytime cycle shifts to night. Now, instead of the moon appearing in the sky, it will now be replaced with a bright pink glowing heart to symbolize the momentous day.

While this is a very small cosmetic alteration to the world, it’s still nice for Epic to acknowledge the holiday with this tiny change. It is a shame, however, that Epic couldn’t go one step further, such as when the team createdthe March Through Time eventfor Martin Luther King Jr., though this is still a welcome addition.

The gaming industry hasn’t always had a perfect track record, assurveys have shown 59% of women hide their gender online to avoid harassment. However, with gestures like the one that Epic Games has provided toFortnite, it is a reminder that gaming is for everyone, and women’s role in the industry should not be forgotten.
