Developers at Obsidian Entertainment decided to learn how to use the Unreal 4 engine by creating the Millennium Falcon and Mos Eisley from theStar Warsuniverse.
WithStar Wars: Episode VIIa success,Rogue Oneright around the corner, and multipleStar Warsgames currently in development, it’s safe to say the galaxy far, far away is a hot topic right now. So it’s not surprising thatStar Warsfans from all walks of life want in on the action, especially those who have played a part in theStar Warsuniverse before.
A few developers at Obsidian Entertainment, known for their work onStar Wars: Knights of the Old Republic IIandFallout: New Vegas, decided to share their love forStar Warsusing the Unreal 4 engine. The crew at Obsidian created the Millennium Falcon and Mos Eisley in stunning detail on Unreal 4 as a way to improve their skills with the engine.
According to Jason Lewis, senior environment artist at Obsidian, the project was just for fun and isn’t meant to be used in any upcoming games. He said:
“This is a just-for-fun personal project that we are all contributing to for no reason other than we are all a bunch of super Star Wars fans and thought it would be a good time to jump in and produce a quality fan art project. In addition to just being a bunch of super Star Wars nerds, several of us have been wanting an excuse to learn Unreal 4 for some time now, so we figured that this was a perfect opportunity.”
A full set of photos can be seen in the gallery below, which presents a beautiful, villainous world of Mos Eisley, complete with the Millennium Falcon, X-Wing, and R2-D2.
After seeing the impressive creations Lewis and his team cooked up, it’s disappointing the team won’t be able to develop anotherStar Warsgame for a while. Currently, Electronic Arts holds the 10-year publishing rights to the franchise, with BioWare, DICE,Visceral, andRespawn Entertainmentall taking part in theStar Warsdevelopment endeavor. So those hoping for anotherKnights of the Old Republictitle will be waiting a while. Though when that time does roll around, hopefully Obsidian will get a shot at it, though by then they’ll likely be using the next iteration of the Unreal engine.
While Obsidian won’t be working on a newStar Warstitle, it’s nice to see the team has some impressive skill with theUnreal 4 engine. The developer is hard at work on a number of titles, but has showed interest in taking on anotherFalloutgame after its success withFallout: New Vegas. If Obsidian gets the chance to do so, gamers can rest assured the visuals will be top notch after looking over the impressive shots in the gallery above.
