Elden Ringhas had a massively successful launch and has greatly expanded the community of Soulsborne players who adore FromSoftware titles. However, that experience has been marred slightly for some players with the manytechnical difficulties that are present inElden Ring.
Even with impressive processors and graphical capabilities,Elden Ringhas had a troubled launchthat Bandai Namco has worked quickly to fix. Recently, patch notes for version 1.02 were released across all platforms and intended to fix these errors, such as bugs that caused game crashes, pop-in textures that needed to load in after a fast-travel, or network connection status failures. PC and PS5 versions ofElden Ringwere previously patched with 1.02.1, but another new patch released yesterday that hopes to fix even more errors.

On PC,Elden Ring’s Patch 1.02.2 fixes a major issuewhere “the graphics card was not being used, resulting in slow performance.” This would explain a number of graphical and performance issues that were expressed aboutElden Ring. Aside from other general bugs, Patch 1.02.2 also fixes “a bug that caused the game to quit under certain conditions during a battle with the Fire Giant.” More bugs such as this may arise as players discover new enemies, so it is likely that this will not be the final enemy-related bug that needs to be rectified.
On PS5, the only patch note of interest states that there has been a fix made to “save game progression” being altered, “even when the game is not terminated.” Based on this patch note, it would seem as if players' save files have been incorrect from time-to-time for whatever reason. While quitting out to the main menu saves the game,Elden Ring’s fast-travel to different Sites of Lost Gracealso offers an auto-save feature, so it is possible that feature was bugged.
These are unfortunate errors for players to have to deal with, but it appears that Bandai Namco is acting on them swiftly, and it has not seemed to directly harmElden Ring’s critical reception. Rather,Elden Ringis being review-bombed for many reasons, with some players reiterating how the game’s bugs are indeed hindering their experiences. Some players may not have experienced any of these issues themselves, but they are apparently prevalent enough to have necessitated multiple patch updates since launch.
With any luck, Patch 1.02.2 will have smoothed out more of the rougher spots inElden Ring’s performance. As is the case with any of FromSoftware’s games, it is interesting to observe players' experiences with the game while the community goes in unaware of any extracurricular lore or secrets, and it would be a shame if this first impression ofElden Ringis ultimately subdued by performance and visual bugs.
Elden Ringis available now for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
