One fan of 2022’s hit action RPGElden Ringtook a unique approach to designing their latest character, choosing to roll a mage with extremely low intelligence with comical results. While unusualcharacter builds forElden Ringare nothing new, the video of this helplessly inept mage struggling to cast even a simple spell is sure to elicit a chuckle from fans of FromSoftware’s latest masterpiece.

Martin, the dark and melancholy atmosphere that has become a trademark of director Hidetaka Miyazaki, and FromSoftware’s acclaimed tough-but-fair combat,Elden Ringmanaged to draw in both fans of the developer’s previous titles likeDark Soulsas well as gamers new to the Soulslike genre. Already awash in praise from gamers and critics,Elden Ringwon Game of the Year at the New York Game Awardsearlier this month, marking yet another GOTY win for the hit title.

In a hilarious and impressive video titled “Low intelligence mage build is the next meta” posted on the r/Eldenring subreddit, user BrownVented shared the misadventures of their magically incompetent mage character as it bumbled its way throughElden Ring. The video begins with BrownVented engaged in a PVP battle with another player, who appears visibly confused as the mage’s Glintstone Pebble spell fires erratic blue bolts off in every direction except that of his opponent. Playing up his character’s confusion, BrownVented activates the Dejection emote and falls to his knees before his opponent, who then comes over to comfort the struggling mage.

Wanting to show how this middling mage would perform in a real battle, the video cuts to the character taking on the infamousElden Ringboss Maleniaalong with two other players. While the mage’s spells are as equally ineffective against the Blade of Miquella as they were in PVP, BrownVented showcases some remarkable acrobatic skills throughout the battle, deftly dodging all of Malenia’s attacks and drawing her aggro while his allies whittle down her health bar. Pleased with his contribution to the battle, the video ends with the mage defiantly kicking apart Malenia’s chair as his allies deliver the killing blow.

Playing as a mage who can barely cast a spell may not be the most effective way to take onElden Ring, but this video shows that it can certainly be an amusing one. Players looking for a bit more muscle for the game’s biggest battles might want to skip the mage, though, and justsummon Rocky Balboainstead.

Elden Ringis available now for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
