Fans of theDoomseries got a first look today at one of the new enemies waiting for them in the upcomingDoom Eternal. It will be a demon called “Whiplash,” and according to official PlayStation Twitter account, she will be the Female Demon inDoomEternal.

The demon is the second new demon announced this year, after theDoom Hunter. Whiplash was announced through the official PlayStation Twitter account, where she was described as a “slithering, chain-lashing foe.” The Tweet was accompanied by a gif of the demon attacking the camera, as well as a link to pre-order the upcomingDoom Eternalgame.

Whiplash appears to be a medusa-like creature, with a bio-mechanical snake body. Her arms have glowing red scythes on the end of them. The glowing red blades are attached to chains, and when Whiplash attacks, she whips them out. It’s unclear if she will be a melee-only enemy, or if the blades will have some kind of ranged attack as well. Players didn’t see the demon in the first10 minutes ofDoom Eternalgameplay, so players can assume that she’ll be an enemy encountered later in the game.

There has been some pushback online to the claim that Whiplash is the first female demon. Some players have pointed to, among others, The Summoner, a demon from the previousDoomgame. The Summoner is demon who not only spawns other demons, but has an incredibly high DPS ranged attack. It’s one of themost terrifyingDoomenemies in the game. While the summoner isn’t identified as female in the game, it has a feminine body shape, and the sounds it makes are more high pitched than the other demons. This has lead to a number of players reading the demon as female.

Other gamers have argued that gendering the demons in the game is somewhat silly. One demon called the Lost Soul is just a floating skull that floats and screams. It’s hard to make an argument that this is a trait of any gender. But it’s good to know thatDoom Guy will kill a demon with a sword, regardless of its gender.

Either way,Doom Eternalis looking like an absolute blast to play. Players can look forward to these new enemies, therevamped platforming mechanics, and the iconic first-person shooter gameplay. IfDoom Eternalis even half as good asDoom 2016, it’s going to be a great game, no matter how the demons identify.

Doom Eternalwill be released on PC, PS4, Stadia, and Xbox One on March 20th with a Switch release to come at a later date.
