Destiny 2facesa dilemma: how to welcome new players while also satisfying the fans that have sunk up to thousands of hours into the game. Bungie has officially announced that the decision has been made, and thatDestiny 2to be a full reset. That means pretty much everything will be locked intoDestiny 1, includingDestiny 1Light level, possessions, andEververse-related itemsand currency.
The only thing that will carry forward intoDestiny 2are the character personalizations that fans have created for the original game. In the announcement on the developer’s blog, Bungie said that specifically means the class, race, gender, face, hair, and marking selections for all characters will carry forward. This will occur as long as that character has hit Level 20 and completed the original campaign’s last Black Garden story mission.
While veterans who have collected a Vault full of their favorite weapons and gear will have to leave them behind when it comes toDestiny 2, Bungie says it plans to award the accounts of veteran players “with honors that reflect [their]Destiny 1accomplishments.” Bungie told fans that this decision is for the best:
It allows us to introduce the major advancements and improvements that all of us expect from a sequel, ensuring it will be the best game we can create, unencumbered by the past. […] Sequels represent the start of a new adventure for every player, with new worlds to explore, new stories to tell, new powers to acquire, new loot to earn, and much more.
This all fits in tone with what little we’ve heard aboutDestiny 2so far, specifically regarding Activision and Bungie’s objective ofexpanding the global reachof theDestinyfranchise with its sequel. This decision gives both new and old players an equal starting point when it comes to playingDestiny 2. That may be especially important if therumors of the sequel coming to PCprove to be true.
Destiny 2is being kept tightly under wraps, but Activision has said the game features acinematic story with a “memorable cast"of characters. Plus, it isstill on track, according to Activision, for a release by the end of this year.
Before that full release, though, Bungie also announced that one more content update, called Age of Triumph, will come toDestiny 1. The developer will reveal more during the month of March, with Age of Triumph launching in late March.
