Destiny 2has beenofficially revealedand is up for pre-order, and with that comes the announcement that the game will have an Expansion Pass. TheDestiny 2Expansion Pass will give access to the currently untitled Expansion 1 and Expansion 2, and costs $40 US when bought on its own.
For those wanting to opt in to getDestiny 2’s DLC expansions, there are many ways to go about it besides buying it separately. That’s because the Expansion Pass (which is basically a Season Pass, as other games would call it) is included inmany editions of the gamealready, specifically the Collector’s Edition, Limited Edition, Digital Deluxe Edition, and Game + Expansion Pass bundle.
The description of the Expansion Pass doesn’t give too many hints away as to what those expansions will contain, only saying that they will bring “brand new story missions, cooperative activities, competitive multiplayer, and a wealth of new weapons, armor, and gear.” Although vague, it sounds pretty much identical to what fans are used to inDestiny 1’s expansions.
While gamers will want to weigh their options regarding whether to buy the Expansion Pass, it’s important to remember the wayDestinyhas always worked is that a new expansion updates many aspects of the game and adds new content. What that means for those who don’t pay for an expansion is that they are locked out of activities like Nightfalls, the weekly Strike playlist, certain Crucible playlists, and can even miss out on inventory from Xur, just to list a few. Things may work differently inDestiny 2,but that is howDestiny 1has dealt with expansions in the past.
Speaking of the past, theDestiny 2Expansion Pass is an identical setup to what was offered withDestiny 1. Back in 2014, those who bought the Expansion Pass got access to The Dark Below andHouse of Wolvesexpansions for a cheaper price than if they would have purchased them on their own.
Back then, the Expansion Pass was $35 with each expansion being $20 on their own, saving those who bought the pass $5. The increased price of the sequel’s Expansion Pass almost surely meansDestiny 2’s expansions will cost more than $20 each, and could potentially cost $25 or $30 each. That would give holders of the Expansion Pass either a $10 or $20 savings, respectively (again, if that is even the pricing, which remains unknown for now).
Those on the fence will have plenty of time to decide if they want to commit to the Expansion Pass, including a chance to play theDestiny 2 betathis summer.
Destiny 2will launch September 8 on PS4, Xbox One, and PC.
