On his promotional tour forViolent Night,David Harbour also got into some details about the upcomingThunderboltsfilm. In the movie, he’s set to reprise hisBlack Widowrole ofthe Red Guardian, a.k.a. Alexei Alanovich Shostakov.
Thunderboltsis set to be the payoff to one key phase four plotline fromMarvel Studios: the plotting of Countess Valentina Allegra de Fontaine (Julia Louis-Dreyfus). The titular team consists of a group of anti-heroes who have previously found themselves on the wrong side of the law, including John Walker, Alexei Shostakov, Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh), Antonia Dreykov (Olga Kurylenko), Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan), and Ava Starr (Hannah John-Kamen).

In an interview withCollider, Harbour said he had yet to read the script, but he does knowthe rough story ofThunderbolts, which he describes as “really good” and added, “it’s not what you’d expect. It incorporates a couple new elements, new things that we have yet to see in the universe.” He stopped short of stating what these new elements would be, but he later saidThunderboltswill introduce “a thing that’s super cool. It’s vital.” He also said the dynamic between Shostakov and Yelena will be explored in a “way that’s really cool.”
Harbor spoke more in detail about his views onThunderbolts,which will feature less-heroic characters than the MCU is used to. Describing the team as “mercenaries,” he acknowledged that they are not at the “top” of the universe like the Avengers. Instead, these characters are people who have been left behind by society, who operated in shadowy organizations, or who have criminal histories.
What these new elements may be is anyone’s guess. In abreakdown of the MCU’sThunderboltslineup, many fans have noted that most of the characters are super soldiers. This would likely indicate that the scope of the film won’t be anything cosmic and will remain pretty grounded. Perhaps the “new elements” will involve the characters going up against a “good” organization.
