After five years of development and just over one year in early access, the Behemoth’s newest game,Pit People, is finally going to see a full release.
The Behemoth has long been known for its charming brand of off-beat comedy and unusual takes on established genres. The developer’s first big game,Alien Hominid, let shoot ‘em up fans unleash massive destruction with an antihero rather than a stalwart hero.Castle Crasherstook the gaming world by storm with its off-the-wall action, andBattleblock Theatergave players a classic platformer experience filtered through the lens of deadly and ludicrous stage plays. In keeping with tradition, the developer’s latest game brings the developer’s signature wit and silliness to yet another gaming genre.
Pit Peopleis a hex-based strategy game wherein players assemble an ever-growing team of villagers, robots, cupcakes, and other oddities as they struggle to navigate an increasingly hostile world ruled by an angry narrator. As they progress across the map and through the many battles thrown their way, players can grow their army through either finding new allies or capturing opposing units.
Players have full control over the composition of their army and would do well to change it often since each type of unit has its own strengths and weaknesses. Units are governed by a simplified rock-paper-scissors system and the entire experienced is suffused withBehemoth’s signature brand of humor.
The developer announced today thatPit Peopleis leaving early access and getting a digital release on March 2 for PC and Xbox One. The game will sell for $19.99, but can be acquired for $14.99 for the remainder of its time in early access. The Behemoth also released a new trailer for the game detailing the announcement and briefly chronicling the major updates applied toPit Peopleover the past year.
With this release,Pit Peoplewill join several other games, like Flaming Fowl’sFable Fortune,on the list of titles that spent a significant amount of time in early access before getting a full and true release. While early access is nothing new, one can’t help but wonder if it’ll wind up as standard practice for independent developers if the current trend continues.
