The next-generation of video games has arrived. TheXbox Series X had a successful launch, as did the PS5 over the past few days. Both consoles aren’t easy to find, as gamers have swooped them up the moment they become available. Each console brings its own value to the industry, with PC-like power being a major selling point. One game seems to already be taking advantage of the next-gen tech;Call of Duty: Warzone, but only on the Xbox Series X.
The Microsoft Store listing for the extremely popular battle royale shows that the game can now run in 120 FPS, as canCall of Duty: Modern Warfare. However,Call of Duty: Warzoneon the PlayStation 5 doesn’t seem to indicate that this is possible, and a test done by Digital Foundry confirms this.

Digital Foundry is perhaps the authority on gaming performance, as it continually tests video game performance from various perspectives. When a big game appears, Digital Foundry is there to testwhich console runs it best, likeRed Dead Redemption 2. In the case ofCall of Duty: Warzoneon next-gen, Digital Foundry looked at the performance of the game on the PS5 and Xbox Series X, and Microsft’s new console is the only one that received the boost to 120 FPS. Although the testing shows that the game usually hits markers somewhere in between 100-120 FPS.
Infinity Ward recently released an update and patch notes, but the performance changes for next-gen weren’t mentioned. However, thanks to the information on Microsoft’s listing showing the 120 FPS change, and the results of Digital Foundry’s test, it becomes clear thatWarzoneandModern Warfarenow runs smoother on the Xbox Series X, butWarzoneis stuck at 60 FPS for the PS5.
One of the theories for this is that the PS4 version ofWarzoneruns in backward compatible mode for the PS5, meaning it technically is not a port. This is not the case for the game on the Xbox Series X/S. If the game is officially ported over, then performance may change.
As far as not even mentioning the updated performance on its patch notes, Activision may be choosing to stay quiet on that portion of the update if the PS5 will eventually receive it as well. Or, it could be that the focus is shifting to the brand newCall of Dutygame,Black Ops Cold War,and its 120 FPSon both the PS5 and Xbox Series X.
