Like mostCall of Dutygames,Modern Warfarefeatured a PS4 exclusivity deal that locked certain features behind the Sony platform for set amounts of time. Perhaps the most controversial part of the exclusivity deal at launch was making theModern WarfareSurvival mode a timed exclusive, but that is finally going to change at the beginning of October.
After nearly a year-long exclusivity deal, Infinity Ward Communications Manager Ashton Williams confirmed that Survival will be arriving on both PC and Xbox One October 1st. Admittedly, though, not many fans may care considering a lot of players have reportedlydeleted the Spec Ops portion ofModern Warfareto make space for the game’s massive content updates. Though the mode is more stable than it was when it launched on PlayStation 4, reviewers criticized it for being overly difficult like the rest of the Spec Ops mode inModern Warfare2019.

Still, some players will surely jump into the game mode and give it a chance. For players unfamiliar with the concept of Survival, the mode’s name is a good indication of what they’ll be getting. The goal is to survive 20 waves with up to four players, with enemies wearing suicide vests and Juggernaut suits mixing up the rounds and adding difficulty. The mode was essentiallyCall of Duty: Modern Warfare 3’s answer forTreyarch’sCall of DutyZombies modewhen it first released, only with human enemies, limited waves, killstreaks, and no storyline.
With the mode waning in popularity yet still being featured in many Infinity Ward games, it would not be too surprising to see it make a comeback with theModern Warfaresequel. It will be interesting to see how well the current version of Survival performs on PC and Xbox when it comes at the start of the month. While there are likely a handful of players on each platform who have kept interest in the mode and been patient while waiting for its release, it is extremely unlikely that it reaches huge player numbers like theCall of Duty: Black Ops Cold WarAlphadid.
The mode finally coming to other platforms after such a long time only deepens the massive sixth season of content forModern Warfare, with yesterday’s trailer providing plenty of info on what is coming to the game. New maps for Gunfight, Ground War, and multiplayer join the upcoming addition of tunnels to theWarzonemap. Anew sniper rifle and assault riflewill be available, as well as Halloween-themed skins.
For those excited about what is possibly the final season ofModern Warfare, theroadmap released for Season 6should prove to be exciting. With the addition of Survival to the Season 6 update, PC and Xbox players are getting moreCoDcontent than PlayStation for once — even if the slightly larger content drop includes something PS4 fans have had for almost a year.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfareis available now on PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
