At the most recent PlayStation State of Play event, Activision released theCall of Duty: Modern Warfarestory trailer. The trailer was met with a mostly positive response from the community, but it included some additional information at the end that has caused quite a bit of backlash. At the end of theCall of Duty: Modern Warfarecampaign trailershown in the PlayStation State of Play, it was revealed that the game’s Spec Ops Survival mode would be PS4-exclusive until June 07, 2025.
This means thatCall of Duty: Modern Warfareplayers on PC and Xbox One will be blocked out of playing an entire game mode until around the time that next year’sCall of Dutycomes out. As expected, this has caused quite the controversy, with many on Twitter, Reddit, and elsewhere - even PS4 owners - criticizing the decision. Taylor Kurosaki, narrative director forCall of Duty: Modern Warfare, has taken the time to respond to some of the people upset about the decision on Twitter.

Kurosaki has said that Survival inCall of Duty: Modern Warfareis “1% of the game” and that he would “rather have everyone playing 99% of the content at the same time than 100% of the content some time later.” Many responses on Twitter have acknowledged that neither Kurosaki nor any of theCall of Duty: Modern Warfaredevelopers for that matter are the ones that made the decision to haveSpec Ops Survival exclusive to PS4for an entire year.
The length of Spec Ops Survival’s timed-exclusivity seems to be the main reason why people are upset. Previously,Call of Dutytimed-exclusivity just meant players had to wait about a month to get new maps. WithCall of Duty: Modern Warfare,all of the DLC maps will be released at the same time across all platforms, and furthermore, all of the maps will be released free of charge instead of players being expected to pay extra for a season pass. For some, getting DLC maps at the same time and for free may be worth the trade-off of not getting Spec Ops Survival for a year.
Whether or not theSpec Ops Survival controversyhas an impact onCall of Duty: Modern Warfare’s sales remain to be seen. PC and Xbox One players are basically expected to pay the same price for less content, though console exclusivity deals haven’t seemed to hurt games likeDestinyor pastCall of Dutytitles, so it’s hard to say what will happen at this point.
