With Treyarch working on 2018’sCall of Duty: Black Ops 4, many have assumed that 2019’sCall of Dutywill be developed by Infinity Ward, which would keep with the franchise’s three year development cycle for each game. However, a new job listing may indicate that Infinity Ward’s next project is actually aimed at next-generation consoles instead.
A job listing on the recruiting website SelectMinds shows that Infinity Ward is hiring a temporary narrative scripter to work on a “new, exciting, unannounced” game that is in development for “multiple next gen platforms.” The listing doesn’t clarify if this game is a newCall of Dutyor not, but since Infinity Ward has developed nothing butCall of Dutygames since its inception, it’s a safe bet.

It’s clear from the listing that Infinity Ward is hiring for a next-generation project, and that has some interesting implications. If the project Infinity Ward is hiring for does come out next year, then it could indicate that the rumors about next-gen consoles releasing in 2019 are true. Of course, it’s possible Infinity Ward is hiring for its next project after2019’sCall of Duty, or it could be a sign that 2019’sCall of Dutyis being developed by another Activision studio so that IW can focus on the next generation of consoles.
At the time of this writing, the general consensus seems to be that next-generation consoles won’t hit until 2020 at the earliest, but that estimation could be off. After all, Microsoft has already mentioned Xbox Scarlet, the codename for its next Xbox console, so it’s possible the next-generation will kick off sooner than expected.
In the meantime, the job listing does give some clues about what to expect from Infinity Ward’s next-gen FPS. The studio is looking to hire someone that has a “broad understanding” of both single player and multiplayer game design, so that seems to be a confirmation the game will have a campaign of some sort. This stands in stark contrast to the upcomingCall of Duty: Black Ops 4, which isabandoning single playerto focus on zombies, multiplayer, and battle royale.
This would actually be in line with previous rumors about Infinity Ward’s nextCall of Dutygame.Rumored to beModern Warfare 4, it will apparently have a single player campaign, the franchise’s standard multiplayer experience, and zombies, but all of that has yet to be confirmed.
