The official word, for now, is thatCall of Duty: Modern Warfarewon’t feature a battle royale mode. Despite that, more and more information regarding a purportedCall of Duty: Modern Warfare’s battle royale mode continues to leak online. The latest leak stems for a reported datamine ofCall of Duy: Modern Warfare’s ongoing PC beta. The leak reportedly revealsModern Warfare’s battle royale map locations, several lootable items, and most curiously a form of cash called Plunder.
Plunder is definitely the most interesting aspect of theModern Warfaredatamine. It looks to be an in-game currency of sorts; a lootable cash found within the battle royale’s map. Exactly what Plunder would be used for isn’t clear, however. It might allow players to purchase loot if necessary, as recently seen in thenow-defunctRadical Heightsbattle royale. It could also be a meta currency, used outside of the match between rounds. This is a mechanic used inEscape from Tarkov.

Surprisingly, the datamined map locations forModern Warfare’s battle royale are very generic. Locations include the Police Station, Supercenter, Firestation, and Quarry. There are some more eyebrow-raising locations, like the Boneyard or the Gulag, which sound a bit more serious in tone. Also interesting is the game’s Bank location, which may or may not be related to the Plunder mechanic. Altogether there are 17 listed locations, implying a decently-sized map.
Finally, there are four individual items mentioned in the uncovered battle royale file. Plunder is one of those items. Armor is another, which isn’t surprising to see. Armor is an extremely common lootable item in battle royale games, after all. Medical is another expected item, as players would need to heal. The final item is interesting, as it’s Alcohol. This may or may not work similarly toPlayerUnknown’s Battlegroundsenergy drinks or pain killers. It could be something entirely different, too. Also noted is a colorization to the loot, which perhaps implies ararity mechanic like inFortniteorApex Legends.
With this latest leak, theCall of Duty: Modern Warfaremystery surrounding its rumored battle royale mode grows all the larger. Infinity Ward continues to make public statements adding confusion to the issue, saying in August that the team isfocused wholly on core multiplayer modes. But as more evidence of a battle royale mode comes to light, those comments seem less true and more misleading.
Some rumors say that astandalone, free-to-playModern Warfarebattle royale modewill be launched at a later date. If that’s true, Infinity Ward should say so, because otherwise there will be manyModern Warfareplayers wondering where the mode is at the game’s launch.
