How Modern Warfare 2’s Campaign Seems Closer to the Originals

From what can be seenofModern Warfare 2’s campaignfrom the recent reveal trailer, it is clear that it is aiming to be expansive, grand, and action-packed. With a comprehensive cast of classic characters being showcased amidst the heat of battle, the scale and stakes ofModern Warfare 2’scampaign seem to be paying serious respects to its source material in more ways than one.

One of the more overt ways in whichMW2seems to be more akin to the original trilogy comes in the showcasing of extremely similar key plot points. From the limited glimpse of the campaign seen by the reveal trailer, Task Force 141 seemingly come across a nuclear warhead hidden within a shipping container, in a way very similar to the originalModern Warfarecampaign. The trailer also showcased an oil rig infiltration, an iconic mission withinthe originalModern Warfare 2.

On the other hand, 2019’sModern Warfarewas a much more intimate and muted experience, nodding towards its source material while focusing on a mostly unique plot. Aside from featuring the likes of Gaz andCaptain Price, the 2019 title was focused more on covert and small-scale warfare, tackling terrorism and engaging in foreign rebellions.

While this was of course a factor of the original trilogy, the warfare on display quickly became global, with the originalModern Warfarefranchise essentially showcasing a Third World War via the launching of nuclear warheads and an invasion of America by Russian forces. The upcomingModern Warfare 2appears to be grounded in this brand of more intense and directly consequential fighting, while providing a more informed roster of classic characters that is inexorably going to give the title a more old school feeling than its predecessor.
